candy colours, sure their not metalics
« on: May 25, 2007, 09:29 PM »
again  would like all the help on this one,  get loads of pms about candy reds, blues ect, but where these frames

originally candy colours, i know some where but looking at a lot of bikes  to me most look metalic,

candy is a very expensive process of between 3 to 4 coats to achieve the finish,  powder is one coat,

and metalic can look like fine candy :idiot2:

if you where a bike manufactuer  would you use a 3 coat process or one thats one coat and cheaper to obtain the

same finish :-\

Hi
My local powder coaters in Aldershot can do a green with red fleck (or something like that) which looks like a metallic. I don't know where they got the stuff from but perhaps other colours are available.

I had a particular interest in this stuff as I want to get a Historic Kart chassis finished in the original blue which looks metallic but according to a few people who know its something different. It was made in the early 60's so wether it's something that is still available I couldn't say.

Surely its clear over base, the more clear the better the shine.

no mate  the trick is in the even spread of the flake, candy,   the laquer then seals it and brings out the shine

A traditional Candy,is either a high mettalic silver or gold base coat, covered by several coats of candy depending on the desired depth required, then several coats of clear to finish. The wet paint will always look better than a powder... :daumenhoch:

Dan,

Here's an original GT candy red from 81-82ish. It's a flat silver base coat with a light red semi translucent red coat over the top (no metalic flakes at all).

With Flash

Without flash

Hope that helps

Andy

P.S. I gave quad Pete a sample of the paint from the above forks he may be able to pass that on to you

quoted for truth,

the candy look is paint only and very difficult and time consuming to get right, but done properly looks stunning,

i've never seen a powder finish come close, nearest was a chrome/high polished frame with translucent coloured powder on top,

this morning i stripped a candy red standard 125r and wasnt overly impressed with the finish of the factory job, i asked a custom car specialist friend about re-doing the candy flake,

he just laughed and asked me how patient i was!

i always thought the term "candy apple" came from the rich, glossy, translucent effect found on "candy apples" or as we call them "toffee apples"  :LolLolLolLol:

thanks mate,  from this answer it goes back to my question about some original colours may not be candy,

just metalics that look like candy, if this is the case my job is so much easier :daumenhoch:

what standard byke co called "candy apple red" was to my eye definitely a laquered metallic finish,,

from memory what hutch called "candy apple red" was closer to the traditional custom car/bike "metal flake" finishes which seem to sparkle more, i thought it was due to the larger "flakes" used and more layers of laquer, but i'm no expert!

i'll ask my mate tomorow if he's in his workshop, he'll no doubt laugh at me again!

see, no offence but i'd disagree,

thats closer to the standard bykes "metallic" finish,

these two are what would normally be termed "metal flake" , you can see how the flakes are larger and brighter making the finish/effect sparkle or "pop" more,

but where does the "candy apple" come into it all?

i've dug out pics of the hutch and standard colours for comparison, i'll post them up,

the willy's coupe is as close to what i'd call "candy apple red"

so i would hazard a guess that "candy" colours are metallic, but not "flake"!!

wtf?! :idiot2:

The gas tank is probably using 8mm flake, normal 'sparkle' is smaller !!

If you really wanted to know how Standard do it I could find out from a mate, He'll ask the right questions to the horses mouth!!

Candy is simply a coloured laquer so to speak (they do come as shifty's aswell but tend to work from clear)  A candy red will look different depending on if it has a silver, black, white or red base (or similar).  You can do some wicked green effects !

Flake does come in various shapes, styles and sizes.

I reckon a prism F&F would look the bollox !!  :4_17_5:

dan i think also todays paints /powders are so good that they can hit the spot
in there finished look.
the real deal is the real deal, time consuming, many coats ,time and cost so there is the compromise.
todays powders can look very good for a fraction of a custom paint job.
