Grind Magazine – 1996 (loads of scans)

Grind Magazine – 1996

Grind magazine was a BMX magazine from Future publishing. It was a one off BMX mag and I don’t think Future did any BMXs mags after it. I friend of mine was very involved in the making of Grind we all were happy to help out with all kinds of things from ‘how to’s and bike tests. One of the funnies things we did was an article on BMX rider stereotypes. 5 of us chose a riding discipline and dressed up appropriately. We hammed it up big time, and people seemed to find the funny side, even if I did think I was going to get shot by a flatland gangster for a while.

Last night I found my copy of Grind so I scanned some of it in. There is loads of cool stuff in there, the adds, the bike tests, the products, all great. I could have scanned every page but I have just done a few … for now anyway.

Cover

Rider stereo types

Jamie didn’t ride BMXs but he was the cleanest cut kid we knew. The closest thing we had to a race bike was Taffs 24” CW … which later he folded in half at High Wycombe race track

Ian was making the magazine so he got to be the cool guy Dirtjumper. That was his own bike at the time, which was Crowmans old dirtbike.

I was the gangsta flatlander. The bike was a 16” BMX borrowed from the bike shop we all worked at. It had a double top tube and was tiny so it seemed like a good flatland bike. I totally faked some flat land tricks. The pegs were so big and the wheels so small I was just leaning with the peg on the floor for the pics

Crowman cleaned up and tucked his shirt in for the vert rider. The bike was a bike that was tested elsewhere in the magazine.

Taff (who was taken away in an ambulance at MK07) was the street rider. He is riding Crowmans bike (see post in ‘mid’ about it). Its just the bike same now, only hes painted the frame white. Funny thing is, Taff doesn’t look far off street riders of today, with his Metal shirt.

There were loads of cool adds and products in Grind but Ive only scanned some of them.

Here is another one for you

I didnt know the S&M team were co-sponsored by fishbone or that Ian Morris used a UFO for a while. It helps to explain why I got sent a UFO … even if I didn’t use it!

Dan, that pic RULES!!!! Taff did his coller bone on the sunday, just having a roll around between motos. He only started back at work this week! It might well have been a bit of rib and shoulder blade too but they cant do anything about any of them so they didnt bother X-raying him all that much. Taff does like to crash!

It was a massive mag. 112 pages of full colour!
Having said that, Future publishing could have probably sold it for free, they are so big!

Nice one Alex.  I bought that mag and it's in one of several boxes of 1990-2001 BMX mags in my folks loft!

I'd forgotten all about that mag.  Thanks for reminding me!

Came out just before the 1996 Worlds (when Dale Holmes won his first title), so it had plenty of racing in it  :daumenhoch:

There is loads of racing in it. Its a very full magazine. I might do some more scanning, Im sure there is more that people will like

Laz, have another look through it. I think you might like it more now, what with all the talk of how empty and samey UK Ride is now.

Taffs CW had red Ukia rims on suntour large flange hubs ... the very same wheelset that are on my 24" challenger right now. Him folding that frame came right when I was after some 24" wheels. I really must give them back to him.

if memory serves me correct it was released just in time for the backyard jam in 96 in the field. pretty much everyone had a copy. i believe future publishing needed to sell roughly 20000 cpoies to make it profitable. i don't think there was 20000 bmxers in the country at that point! maybe the next year when the big boom hit. cheers channel 5!

can't say as though i liked it though. i thought some of the pics made a mockery of the sport i love!
