candy colours, info needed
« on: October 18, 2006, 12:23 PM »
This is a strange one, as a powder coater i'm asking your advice on candy blue and red.
talking to my partner this morning about how many pms i get on these colours we both
can't work out how it's done in powder, candy colours come from custom cars and the
drag racing scene.  we think it is 3 or 4 coat process that powder can't do.

So the help i need is,

does any one know the process in powder,

how much has it cost you,

One coat in powder is the same as 3 to 4 coats in two pack so does it look thick,

Any help will appreciated then i can start to look at setting up these colours.

When I got my frame powdered, it was done with chrome-look powder then candy red over that. It looks great in the sun. You cant tell indoors though. He went a bit heavy with the candy red. You can still see the serial numbers though.

he clamped it with a pointed g clamp in 4 places and over did it on the bead blasting
so frame was very ruff and dented lol

Rhys i've said before in other threads that blasting doesn't damage frames, ie welds, strength ect but if you can, never get them blasted,  try to strip back to original metal   it's the best way to powder,  when blasted it's like painting over sand paper, you need a thicker coat just to cover the rough blast.  the best jobs i do is on smooth sanded metal.   hope this is of help

you can have any powder you want,  the trouble is if it's not a standard stock item them you pay for special mix wich can work out very expensive.  a standard 25 kilo box is around 3.50 a kilo,  specials can be up to 30 pounds a kilo.   as for filler only metal filler will  take 180c    standard filler will bubble at that heat.

Here you are Dan, direct from the instructions.

Quote
Uses in Powder Coating clears
1. Candy Pearls
Our candy pearls should never be mixed with less than
½ pound per 25 grams of our powder. DO NOT HOLD
THE BAG DIRECTLY OVER YOUR CLEAR POWDER,
as the outside of any bags may contain contaminants
that could effect your final result. Candy pearls should
not be baked at temperatures over 400 degrees
Fahrenheit. Follow the instructions of your clear powder
for best baking results.

So looks like you mix the 25g with about 300g of clear.  Got to love the way they sell the stuff in grams and then quote pounds for mixing.

Also quoted from their website (which is a bit of a mess really)

Quote
Our Candy Pearls are slightly opaque, meaning that they will competely cover any base coat after several coats. Remember, you are dealing with solid particles of mica, meaning that you will not acheive a truly transparent finish, but will get a semi-transparent finish or a metallic finish, depending on the amout of our pearl candy you use in you clear coat.
