'ello there,

Got to say that I do prefer the look of survivor bikes before they get all done up, powdercoated with shiny new tyres that will never touch dirt again. Its just a personal preference but I think that when they are in their original state with all the scratches, random stickers and mismatched parts, they reflect the history of the bike better - they all tell a story about the history of the bike and I think it is a shame when it all gets painted over/replaced. I can understand a restoration if the bike is totally wrecked, but otherwise I think it can be kinda cool to keep it how it is. Anyone got any bikes from back in the day that haven't been restored back to the impeccable factory spec? I've posted this in the freestyle section cos I like all the random parts that you used to get on freestlyers ie mismatched tuffs, all sorts of clashing colours and parts, that accumulated over the life of the bike.

I agree up to a certain point, like to keep all my bikes as original as poss ie parts ext

I agree. i was just about to start stripping down a frame to get it re-painted but then I was looking at some pics of when I rode it and thought it would be better to keep it looking the same. I need to get hold of the same parts I used back then but its easier now cos Im not trying to make a bike that looks like new, just that looks like it did when I rode it, even down to the stickers of the time.

one in question and i do agree to a point but some just need to be rebuilt this is boarder line.

Don't you dare.....if you touch that, the history and soul of that bike will be lost forever.

Think about all the stickers, how could they ever be replaced or replicated. And I doubt very much if you could get a lot of the parts / items undone without them snapping / breaking / rounding off. The seat clamp is a one off with the rough sawn edges too, plus all the drill holes, welds etc etc.

Difficult one

A bashed up frame that means nothing to me is screaming to be restored but i ride them and all the scars are my scars so i guess that counts a bit

I saw that gen 1 when it was being sold, then the guy put up some pics of him riding it way back. The bike was exactly the same! It was so cool. It really made me sad that he was selling it. I dont know the guy but it was almost like he was selling the photos of his youth. He cant have needed the money or the space that bad!

i like the best of both worlds. At MK this year we had them all; the show and shine bikes restored or NOS plus all the NOS parts about looking like an 80's bike shop but with the untold survivors and semi restored riders laying about covered in track dirt it looked like any track or trails would have. i just love milling about soaking in all that nostalga

I'd hate to see all the mingërs restored as much as i'd hate to see all the NOS and restored bikes used and abused. The balance looks about right from where i'm sitting

Yep I think this one does qualify for a resto - I think when a bike has been painted with red hamerite it has lost its 'original charm'.

You've all seen these before but here they are. Both are survivors of mine from early on in life. Some new bits like grips and tires but thats about it. The supergoose now has new AME"S too.
