Bullseye 1st gen cranks help!!!

Right guys. I am looking for a little technical help here please.

I have a set of chrome first gen Bullseye cranks and want to fit a Tuf Neck disc to them. The Tuf Neck axle hole is 23.8mm. The Bullseye axle is 22mm.

I ordered a 23.8 to 22mm top hat washer which slides over the Bullseye axle until it reaches the end of the splines. Then there appears to be a ridge before it drops down again as the axle smooths out.

What would be your best advice for me to be able to fit this top hat washer?

The Bullseye splindles are 7/8" Terry, so i'd just  enlarge  the centre hole of the tophat washer by about .5mm (.2mm difference plus a bit of clearance) with a flapwheel on a drill  ;)

I hear what you are saying Steve but, it fits over the splines ans stops where the splines meet the main axle body. You can feel a ridge and on the other side, it tapers down again a little. If I start making the top hat washer slightly bigger, when it goes over the ridge, it will then be slightly loose on the axle body.

Does that make sense buddy  :-\

The ridge is very slight but you can feel it with your fingers and it's enough to stop the top hat washer from just sliding on.

Would heating up the washer open it enough to get over the ridge?

Try putting it on the outside of the  Power Disk against the crank face and not the bearings.

are they 2 piece cranks? if they are i would just use the flap wheel as suggested. if they are 3 piece, check the axle on the other side to see if it has a ridge also.

No, they are 2 piece John. I don't have anything like that kicking around but I do have a file that I will have a go with I think. I just don't want to get it over the 'ridge' and then it slops about on the axle. Even the slightest movement can be felt when peddling.

Axle in the freezer, heat the spider gently with a fan heater or hair dryer etc.
if it anodised don't get it too hot.

Terry, would cutting a neat slot in the top hat with a dremel or hacksaw do the trick? Should give you enough play to get past the ridge but still maintain the correct diameters  :)

Clint, that is great idea buddy and one I think I will try  ;)

As you can see with these pictures, the cranks are two piece, so the drive side crank arm is fixed to the axle. The top hat washer fits over the spline until it reaches where the splines hit the axle body. The ridge is not noticeable to the naked eye so I can't get a picture of it but, the axle slopes up, then down, around the ends of the splines.

I cannot really file down the inner of the top hat washer because it is very thin, 1.6 mm.

I can see it Terry. Think splitting the top hat is much more desirable than trying to sand down the ridge  :daumenhoch:
