I am not sure about ashtabula forks but i have certain bmxs forks which use different size races, i guess all u can do is try and find a smililar race that fits or buy a new headset with the correct diameter for the fork race (measure the ashtabula fork race diameter) also sometimes (in rare cases) the headset cups are different from the standard bmx ones (i have a DB turbo - one of the cheap single tube ones that uses a smaller type headset)
i knwo its not much of a help but that is all i can suggest :)
regards
mark

Try the old fork race with the new headset, if it works, ie, spins freely and builds up correctly go with that.

when you say 1" is it a true 1" headset ,  as  the 1" headsets are smaller than what is considered a bmx headset , even then there is two?  sizes for those ,   1" was used on smaller expert and mini frames , also road bikes,

you could shim the new race to fit the the crown on the forks, done this a few times , shimmed the even smaller French size crowns with no problems , bean tins work great for this , a bit more robust than beer tins , used an old stainless pan for the last one i did , which was the French size crown?

iso head tube with jis fork crown  :tickedoff: :tickedoff:   :LolLolLolLol:
