Mongoose wheels

Hi everyone.
I am building a 1980s mongoose Cali and have got hold of a pair of what appear to be alloy rimmed wheels (the ones with the holes in) and suzue hubs. There is a pro class decal apparent around the valve which looks orig but not sure.
They appear to be in reasonable condition but need to be respoked as they are quite rusty.

Not sure what my options are here, are nos spokes available or is it best to go stainless?
And can anyone recommend either somewhere to get hold of the spokes and retainers and also if anyone is recommended to response the wheels?

Also need replacement rim tape, I presume it's a specific part ? Is it available?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi DT,

You've got yourself a pair of Pro Class rims, which will need a set of 194mm stainless Asahi spokes available from JTSmooth for a tenner or thereabouts. These will come with chrome nips.

The standard rim tape on these is black, if you want to fork out, there are KINK bike Co or other new school types available on eBay, they will probably have a logo printed on them, but you can turn them inside out.

Your local bike shop will lace them and true them for you, mine charge £18 per wheel.

Anytime fella, I forgot to add, for a cheap alternative to rim strips, use electrical tape.

Rim tape is easily made using electrical tape back to back.  Cheap as chips and does the job just as well.

Quick question, do I use a few layers as I'm conscious that the inner tubes will try to bulge out of the holes?

Yes definitely, as many layers as poss.

   NNNNNNNoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo don't cut the spokes out...!!!!

   Just take ten minutes to unscrew the nips and remove the spokes. You can get them up good again using 0000 grade wire wool.

   Clean it all up ad then re-lace using Caleb21 guide over on the museum. Take to LBS to true up. Job done and another set of OS wheels saved.....

   Ive done a couple of sets of 7X/Proclass like this and they look ace.....

Hi

I'm restoring my 81/82 Mongoose and it's Pro Class wheels. I'm missing 2 spokes from the front wheel and 4 also need replacing because they are bent.

Do the Asahi spokes have the long brass nipples?

Here are some pics of a pro-class spoke:





Nipples are 16mm.

I bought 6 individual stainless steel Halo spokes, but the thread on the spokes is a little bit shorter, the nipple is 12mm and the nipples are silver not brass.

Can anyone give me some advice? Please don't say re-spoke, as I want to keep this bike as original as possible, as it's a survivor and my BITD bike.

Alan can you not just use the new spome with the original nipple? Turn it with a spoke key if the screwdriver slot on the back has sheared as most of them do when they tighten them in a factory originally, but it's still perfectly safe to use

That's what I did in the end. The HALO (195mm) spokes are a perfect match. There are only 2 spokes where I have had to use the shorter nipple and it looks ok.

The restoration is coming along nicely.
