1983 chrome Skyway TA
« on: May 14, 2012, 08:04 PM »
Some of you may have seen this on eBay a week or two ago, well my good mate Rich (retrorich78) picked it up from Aldershot and dropped it off with me today. Chuffed to bits  :smitten:
I recently bought a white frame and forks, but it arrived with a crack in the seat tube, and had been hack sawed down the front  :'( so when I spotted this on the bay, I had a punt. This has the makings of a great summer rider - the frame isn't in too bad a shape, the rust is on the surface for the most part, and the drop outs are mint. The forks are rotten, I'll dunk the lot in some oxalic acid and see how it fares. But I may have to re-chrome the forks  :(

I plan to sell the cranks to fund the re-build, so if anyone has an idea of what 3rd gen profiles with spider are worth in this condition, give us a shout  :)

I love this bike already  :smitten:  :smitten:

Cheers,
Tom

Give it all a good clean/polish and put it back together, proper survivor style  :daumenhoch:

And keep the cranks, they look good on it  :daumenhoch:

Nice one Tom!  That'll be cool as fk!

I'm with Betty, why get rid of the cranks?  Unless its funds needed to finish, I'd keep em  :4_17_5:

Ooooooohhhhhhh  :smitten:  well loaded with gear. I never saw that on the bay but to be honest i ain't been paying too much attention. Personally i'd keep the cranks on the bike but if you need the ££££££'s then they'll sell straight away to fund what you need to do to it.

Yep, I want to use as much as is already there, never been fortunate enough to land a full survivor, and when it turned up today I fell in love  :smitten:

I have some 3rd gens here already, but in all honesty I prefer flights, and i have a set of those too  :-[ these need re-chroming, it's flaking all over unfortunately, and why I do like survivor look parts, these are too far gone.

Should have left it as it was and just cleaned it all in situ.

It would be a crime to get this completely re done  :-\  It needs to stay as a survivor and just cleaned up. A bit of coke with tin foil will get rid of that rust, a bit of peek and bobs your uncle  :daumenhoch:

Great bike but needs to stay complete as it is buddy  ;)

Terry, it looks good in the pics, as all bikes do from a distance. But the forks have rusted through the chrome - the chrome on the cranks has flaked and rusted, as I said - I'll use as much as I can and keep the survivor aesthetic, if the forks are salvageable I'll clean them and lacquer them, but it'd be even more of a shame to leave it rotting  :daumenhoch: there is 'survivor' and then there's 'rat look' - not too keen on the latter  ;)

Certainly not a coke and tin foil jobby  :daumenhoch:

Here you go - this gives you an idea of the state of it, even a family share size bottle of coke wouldn't be enough  :D :

This is cool though  8)
