hutch Titron pedals
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:34 PM »
What's the best thing to do with these?
The circle's are where the chrome has cracked/not stuck on the one that has been re chromed, there is also a crack on the other body which is the original finish.
I am thinking i could get the chrome removed and then re chromed, if i do it on both that will cover the cracks,im just fitting them on a show bike so should be ok.
I would have prefered to keep them un chromed and original finish on both but from the little crack it looks like they have been cleaned up underneath so the original finish is not there anymore,im guessing, won't be 100% till i flick a bit more off.
The chap in the unit next door at work does window tints and is also into chroming(he can chrome in lots of different colours as well,so not just chrome colour finish) he was not there today so couldnt ask the best option but will pop in tomorrow and get his ideas on it?
What would you do with them if they were yours?

The chap next door at the chroming place says he can remove the chrome finish but he has to sand blast the chrome one to remove it and he could blast the other(original finish) and that would bring them up nice and clean?
I dont want them to be shiny shiny etc, i want them to look like original but am unsure if i can get this look as the one chromed may have been cleaned up first b4 chroming?
What should i do?
Let him blast them,he says with fine beads? and see what it looks like?
I guess ive got to do this to remove the chrome and go from there,if it doesn't go well i guess i can just chrome them or sell them and give the hassle to who ever wants em  :LolLolLolLol:

Take them to a chromer & get him to reverse chroming process = chrome drops off . Make sure he does'nt leave them submerged long at all ! ( they might melt ! ) ..

I asked him about this today but he said as they have the small cracks in the bodies it MIGHT (wont know till he does them) but might make the crack worse ?
Obviously i dont want that to happen  :-\

I have just looked through my old ebay watched ended items and found these NOS Titron pedals ( they ended on 24th April 2011, and sold for £1120  :idiot2:) the bodies have been polished? The listing said " Very rare and unused early titron 2nd generation pedals from 1982 FACTORY POLISHED with early super sharp cages" these are the same as i have, but mine as not NOS ,my cages are NOS but the bodies are not  :'(

Im just trying to decide which way to go? Do i re chrome them (like the ones above, which sold for more than my house is worth) or try to remove the chrome and get a not so shiny finish?

Help  :LolLolLolLol:

Sorry for the small picture but cant seem to make it any bigger?

Just found another picture of a pair, again they look chromed , they look ok to me  :-\, i agree that they should look original but due to the small cracks in the pedal bodies if i was to chrome them this would cover it up

Chroming won't cover up the cracks they will need to be polished out if possible first.  The Chrome will not cover the crack as there is nothing for the chrome to adhere to, you will see the crack and run the risk of the chrome lifting at that point.

That pic looks like polished alloy too not chrome  :daumenhoch:

Decided to take them next door today so he could blast them both, luckily he was doing some blasting and around 30 mins later he returned with them  :daumenhoch:
I think they look better already and i've not finished them yet, just gave the shafts a quick spin round on the lathe, will do a better job when i have more time or might paint them black as im sure they should be black oxide as original  :-\ but i think i like them as they are now.
Worst part is the cracks in the bodies, what can i do, i have some metal paste i could fill the cracks with then smooth done once dry? What do you lot reckon? The other pedal has a worse crack than this one though which i didn't see till i removed the chrome  :'(
B4 the trip next door

After the trip next door

those cracks could probably be welded up and then ground down and the body polished depending on if you were thinking of using them or not. Personally if ignore them and take the bodies to a polishers for a brushed finish polish. Are you keeping these or putting them up for sale? if selling - leave as they are and let the new owner deal with it ;)

I have a good mate that is a fantastic ally welder who could tidy those up for you; he has done a few things for me and a stem for Steve P plus he knows how anal I am about old BMX parts so he'll treat them properly :). He's based near Uxbridge, let me know and I'll flick you his contact details  :daumenhoch:

yeah you gotta keep the finish og.  I got a few sets.. the ones on the left are nos and actually from the same seller that sold those ones on ebay for £1200 odd .. (funny how they went for that cause these ones were in an identical auction by him a couple of months previous and i paid half that!)
The ones in the middle have been polished and the lines around the centres are gone and they have chrome hutch spindles instead of the black oxide ones like the other 2 sets.  I can get you some closer pics if you need to see anything clearer  :daumenhoch:
