To tall to race a 20"
« on: February 09, 2008, 10:40 PM »
I really want to start racing this year as im fed up of riding my local skatepark but im not sure if at 6ft3" im to tall for a 20". I know i could ride cruisers but it just doesnt feel right. Is anyone else out their riding 20's at roughly the same height.

Longun's about that or maybe a bit more and I'm sure I've seen a few tall riders at Hayes when I've been there so I wouldn't say so.  Tim March nearly won the worlds and he was a tall fooker  :daumenhoch:

If Hayes is your nearest, where are based?

I'm not far these days (Iver Heath) but went to school in Hayes (not far from the current track) and spent most of my youth at the old Hayes track  :LolLolLolLol:

In the Old school series theres a few big lads racing regular. Madd Matt is well over 6 foot, so is nishiki 14, Quadpaul is a tad over 6 foot as well, they dont have any real problems, perhaps you should pop over to an os race and try a few rides out :daumenhoch:

Im seriously thinking of quitting at the moment, my bike may be up for sale soon, its around the 21.5"-22" top tube. Only ridden twice and crashed once.

Still has all the rubber spikes on it around the Comp 3's.
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.

Ben Forwood - 6' 5" ? .

About that, he rides for dialled bikes and uses about a 23"tt.

Felm must be one of the tallest dudes in 19+ (even though he's about 40!), he rode for freeagent last year and redline now I think, so there are frames out there.

I'm 6 foot and I ride a 21"tt, thats about avarage in 30+, well apart from the hobbits from east ungular, they all seem to be about 3 foot tall. ;D

There's a race at Hayes on Sunday, get yourself down there to check out all the lanky gits on little bikes.

If you do come and say hi to me, I'm the bloke with the ginger ponytail in 30+ (number 53) on a tatty black Standard with posh bits. I drive a merc vito with the numberplate MK53BMX. :daumenhoch:

As others have said, Ben's probably the tallest rider in the UK at around 6'5".  He runs a custom 22" frame and over the last 2 seasons has achieved Euro No.1, World No 4, Euro No.4 and World No.2.

There are quite a few off the peg 21.5" - 22" frames around.

I think the next time I get a frame made for Ben, he might go a tad longer at 22.25" or 22.5".  I think  a 23" BMX frame would be pushing the envelope a bit too far and would be difficult to pick-up/manual.

It is mate, light as a feather and it doesn't hurt when it lands on you neither :LolLolLolLol: The ground hurts though. It is at the top end of the Huffy bikes, i like it a lot.

It does have a long frame, which is why i bought it, my son has a GT with an 18/19" top tube, no way can i ride that. I'm just under 6ft by a fraction.

Anyway, try as many bikes as you can for size, these guys on here know there stuff big style, so any info they give you it will be honest.

As i have said, i'm not sure what i'm doing with this yet, time will tell. ;)

Yeah i must admit the info given on here is great, well helpful. Ill probably try to find somthing i can race in the os series for the rest of this year and get up to speed then next year when ill have all the time i need race full on but i really want to get my youngest racing he's 7 and likes the dirt as where my middle son is a skatepark addict.
maybe a PK junior for him  :smitten:

Nice bike i'm just not that keen on the old haro's for some reason, money isnt the issue i just have no time at present to get stuck in buy and ride, a few more weeks yet, i have to read the rules aswell to find out how much of the bike has to be os to race.
