Look what arrived today "BRACKENS"
« on: June 30, 2010, 09:52 PM »
the post man brought me this today

ok i know its just a box but its whats in the box

Yep its a Brackens cruiser. now as far as i know this is only the second Brackens frame set in the country. another RADSTER has a pro xl frame set ,and this is the only cruiser as far as i or he knows. but this frame set has a little storey to it.
ive been after an old school cruiser frame set for some time now, i was originally after a profile cruiser. was looking on ebay usa one night and this caught my eye. but as is often the case the auction stated lower 48 states only. not detured i messaged the seller asking would he send to england. i got a reply ,he wanted the auction to run and keep it in the usa. i kept my eye on it and when it didnt reach its reserve i messaged again. when i got my reply and the seller introduced him self as none other than DENNIS DAIN aka THE RED BARRON i was like wow . anyway after a bit of banter the deal was done. now i have to point out at this stage that this frame set wasnt raced by DENNIS just in his possesion. i asked Dennis about it and he told me that this frame set was designed with the help of GREG HILL. it doesnt have the bottom bracket strengthening gusset and the drop outs are different from other Brackens frames. from what DENNIS can recal, GREG HILL passed this frame set on to him.DENNIS sent me a photo of my frame set when it was built up.....

yep thats TOMMY BRACKENS himself sat on my frame set. but it doesnt stop there . in side the box DENNIS sent these

a few magazines which i thought was real good of him  then i had a flick through em.

only signed them as well. what a top bloke.
i cant thank DENNIS enough for the frame set and the storey behind it and the magazines .what a great guy. and of course i just had to share with you all.
my only dilema now is do i keep the frame set original chrome or do i have it powder coated???? what you think guys.

Wow! What a great story.      ;)

For those of you that have read my long-winded thread you probably know that I kept all my stuff from my racing days. (I don't think I got rid of anything) Well most everything has some sentimental value to me and I am a real sap for my childhood memories. In the early 80s while working with/for Greg Hill at GHP, I got one of his 1st 24" cruisers. (still have that) I had raced that one time. We decided the bottom bracket was too low on those so he redesigned them and raised the bottom bracket. But somewhere in or around there Greg steered me into this Brackens frame.

I swapped all the parts off the the GHP to the Brackens but, like I said, I never raced it. I had more history with Greg and the GHP 24" so I decided to rebuild it. Well that left me the Brackens and I decided it needed a new home.

I have been buying 'stuff' off EBay for years but this was my first attempt at selling anything. To be honest it was a pain. It takes a lot of effort to get the right pictures to please everyone and you have to describe EVERY LAST DETAIL or something comes back to bite you. I did not tell anyone on any of the boards that it was on EBay and several people told me afterwards that they never saw it at all. It did not meet the reserve and I really didn't care to re-list it.

I got a couple of emails from locals making offers but it actually kind of pissed me off. I mean if you wanted it why didn't you bid on it? (I can be kind of spiteful at times.) Lenny had emailed me early on asking about it but, like he said, I told him to wait till after it ended. Well I figured since you guys have been so nice to me I would send it over to the UK. I'll add this too, shipping to you guys is not cheap. No wonder you don't get much of our stuff. :)

I hope it enjoys it's new home.

Dennis

Yep. My team Proline, the same one from the cover of a 1979 BMXA. There are pictures of it in my thread.
