What do we think about....non original paint jobs?
« on: December 02, 2009, 02:52 PM »
I ask because I have just picked up a Rebel race frame (at-bloody-last) and its painted in a lovely Hutch-u-like candy red.  Was originally gonna strip it and either rechrome or paint white as they are the only two original Rebel colours.  But seeing this in the flesh it looks sweet as.  Just need to sticker it up tonight and i'll take pics.

However, if it gets an overwhelming thumbs down, then I wont waste the decals until it gets refinished.

I know what people will say, 'go with what you like and ignore other peoples comments', but I would like peoples opinions on the subject anyway, whether its a Rebel or a Quad, TA or JMC I wonder what opinion is?

I disagree :LolLolLolLol:

I used to make custom choices but they'd always annoy me and not seem quite right until they were rectified with a factory colour.   Even better, unrestored at all now if possible, I've got to prefer original gear and restored is the dirty word now. But a lot of the time a bike is beyond looking good in its original state.

I agree with him above  ::)
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

Personally I wouldn't be happy unless it was the original colour I'm not a fan of custom colour paint jobs, gotta be original for me.

But that's just me each to their own.

that candy is sic  :smitten: id go with that mate, custom or spec who gives a toss its what you like and what looks better, stick with the candy and use chrome and black parts

 :daumenhoch:

Aye, as soon as I saw it in the flesh I thought of Meticus' Hutch in Novembers BOTM.

As much as I love Phils white race frame, it would be too similar to my Freestyler.  This offers me something different, but if the worst comes to the worst, its only a repowder and new decals if need be.  Just finding the frame has been the hard part, ive wanted one forever.  The candy has just been applied and its mint, your looking at a £50 job, meaning the frame and forks has just cost me £40 ;)

I say build to what suits you irrespective of colour ;)

I've sought advice from Radsters re part changes on bikes, but ultimatley build bikes to your liking rather than building to suit/satisfy 'whats supposed to be expected'.....and who else has a candy rebel race frame....only you :daumenhoch:

I know exactly what you mean Danny - I grabbed a 79 team goose frame that was poorly advertised on USA ebay last year with the intention of restoring it with an "original" factory style finish as it was powdered in a custom colour but on receipt of it the powder job was real nice so i've decided to build it all custom style (eventually  :-[ ) at the end of the day you can build it "custom stylee" and if in 6 months or 12 months time you're bored and fancy a change you can re-do it factory finish  ;)

BTW - Looks ace all decal'd up mate  8)

Nick - that custom Kuwie looks fookin cool too  :coolsmiley:

mongoositis - an expensive disease......

I'm just restoring my first bike and I'm going custom all the way...it's all about what you like, after all it's you who is paying the money and riding it.

i wouldn't destroy a good original finish, but if it needs a new paint job then any colour you like seems fine. Unless your gonna put only stock parts on to make it like it came from the factory then i wouldn't bother about the colour. I had this issue with my nat pro. It is a kind of dark co-op blue :-\ but it has been like that since it was new although it's not a factory finish. I was gonna strip it back to the chrome underneath, but when i got the story and the history behind the paint-job i left it as is. I can always strip it back to the perfect, protected from new, chrome that lies underneath in the future. Do your own thing :daumenhoch:

Decided to build as is and started aquiring parts.  This is the build that was never supposed to happen as I thought I had it packed in, until this came along for a nice price.  I was told it was originally chrome, so maybe in the future I will strip it back and see what it looks like.

Never thought i'd get one of these frames, and as the finish is so nice couldnt bring myself to strip it.  It was only sold as a frame and forks anyway, so as parts wont follow any strict guide, might as well keep the custom paint.
