My 84 GT forks measure 97mm between dropouts, my early 90s Ditchforks measure 99mm, and my 2000s Pitchforks measure 101mm. I would have thought that Peregrine(Suzue) hubs would fit straight in.

I have had this problem before. You need cones which are shoter than the ones on your mid school wheels - the lock nuts on your cones are probably quite thick and there might be washers in between so they need to be taken out. The best solution is to buy an old school axle that has short cones with a thin flatted end and thin lock nut. A skyway axle kit would probably work but any old school axle should do it.
Maybe someone has the cones and locknuts in their toolbox - i haven't unfortunately
