My son who's 10 has asked for a bmx (probably a result of me & this site).I was wondering about building him an old school bike or buying him a new school one.From what I understand the geometry of the new bikes make simple tricks (bunny hops, rockwalks etc.) quite difficult to master & I don't want to put him off before he's really got started - if you know what I mean! I know the old bikes would still be up to the job as demonstrated by the Haro 2009 re-union. Any thoughts/experiences with your own kids would be greatly appreciated.

Get a new school.

Pick him up a basic burner or 90's/00's GT that go quite cheap and if he likes it and gets into it upgrade later-wouldn't spend the earth on a first bike though a he might think bmx sucks after a while,

everything comes loose of creeks on o/s, all the sealed stuff on new school is so low maintenance, nip it up and off you go....

new school. soooooo much better quality and less hassle, and his mates wont rip him to pieces either

Cant say I've ever heard of moves being easier on old bikes.
