My first resto build for my little 6 year old girl
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:16 PM »
After getting back into BMX's at last years VW shows and getting a retro ripper at Xmas as a rider and lurking on here since I decided I fancied doing a resto build and seeing as my 6 year old daughter had just grown out of her bike it would be a good excuse to build her one.
So at the beginning of last month I purchased this 1983/84 MK1 chrome mini burner off the bay as you dont see too many in chrome and if you do they tend to be MK2's but I love a looptail and thought I could make one look better than they did.

She takes one look at it and cant stand the blue :'( but says she would like it in red ::)
Anyway Stripped the bike down and removed all rust with Cocacola and tin foil and polish like the Karate Kid for 12 hours
and the frame started to come up like new

So after much hunting I finds some red 16" Gumwalls in the states and some white 16"OGK replicas which I discovered didn't fit the MK1 frame.

Got a red aero replica saddle and did a mock up build so I could decide what colour bits and peices to buy and to decide on the decals. I had to modify the wheel axles to fit the frame.

I replaced the original brake levers with tech 3's and restored the original calipers.
And now I have finally built it up appart from waiting on some white brake blocks and custom coloured mini burner decals

I know burners are not everyones taste but for a 6 year old I think its pretty cool I shall post more pics after I have applied the decals.

Thanks for the comments its been a buz doing it and also given me the bug to do something else especialy seeing as I dont get to ride this one.

The Bic pen tops are actualy Mountainbike dust caps sprayed red ;) just as bad  :LolLolLolLol: but they looked better than nothing.

As for pads i'm not sure I think they make 16" bikes look all out of proportion but I may consider it once the decals are here and its done.

Nice one, good polishing  :smitten: . There is a chap on here that could make you a set of pads in proportion to the size of the frame, i am sure he will make him self known.  :daumenhoch:
