I was told at 16 years of age I'd never ride again, never run or play any sort of sport.

What would be the next big decision they ask you to make Dan - no more walking?

If I'm brutally honest, I don't think that riding is damaging you particularly. Compare what damage it may be doing to your happiness and general wellbeing.......  throw in a little bit of doctors thoughts of self preservation.......

So.

See you on your bike soon?

My bro in law has had one hip done.  He hasn't got the plastic type as he in his early 40's, I think it is ceramic.
Dunno if this is something different or how well they stand minor abuse. I do remember him saying he shouldn't bend his leg more than 90 degrees (tricky on a BMX) but I don't know if that was just while they were settling in after the op.
I can find out some more if it's of any help.

I would never say "i have given up", even if i haven't ridden / haven't been able to ride since May..
just keep it as part of your life, rollround when you can, do what you can tolerate
i'm happy being able to ride to work at the moment..   I'd love to ride bmx more, but have got to the point of being honest withmyself;
i'm very tall. they're very small, and they don't give..  still love them and i know i'll do some decades when my achilles gets better.  and there will always be a miniramp in the next 20 years, they aren't going anywhere...

i'm not meant to dan, nor am i meant to box, do aikido or any martial art, football, golf, contact/extreme sports. Does it cause me discomfort, yes, do i give a toss, yes, but it doesn't stop me except when the pain is too much. if i thought i was gonna decintergrate(sp) i might think twice, but as things go right now it's more play in haste repent at leisure. I'm not becoming a victim of my body and the doctor can sling his hook if he thinks he's got a say so, no matter what scary stories he comes out with.
it's one of them, you know your limitations or you learn them. Nobody can tell you how it is. If you have osteoperosis for example, you know your gonna break like a twig and would avoid all of the above, to quote OB1, you must do what you feel is right :LolLolLolLol:

like was said earlier, even if you only go out for a little 'play' on the bike 4 or 5 times a year as long as you don't overstep the mark and keep yourself resonably fit  all should be fine. i was advised to do the same as my knee is jacked but despite pain, popping out of joint etc i don't want surgery. too many knee ops leading to more things going wrong and the welsh sports knee specialist even had doubts about the surgery if he was in my shoes. too many other injuries which affect me from time to time but bmx freestyle is part of me. as long as i 'm somehow involved , whether it riding, videoing, editing ,photography i'm still involved in what i love.
you can take the man out of bmx but you can't take the bmx out of the man!!

so, the stubs are Ti, but the cups are nylon?

I reckon youll be reet when you get the metal cups.

if the nylon ones are chucking out swarf, your bodys bound to have a hard time with it.

They told Lance Armstrong he would never race bikes again, they said the same to Alex Zanardi about racing motorcars.  The human body has an amazing capacity for recovery mostly to do with mindset, I'd say continue to ride now and make damn sure you try (slowly not all at once) when you get through surgery.  I hope it works out for you Dan  :daumenhoch:.

If you was to give up riding and just sit there eating and drinking you would put on weight then the same Doc would tell you to get some exercise ::)
IMO ride when you can, be smooth and no 8 foot drops to flat :LolLolLolLol:

I'd have to keep riding i think... even if it meant just rolling about!!

Most Doc's would probably say thay anyway for most injuries... not understanding the mentality of bmx!!

My Doctor is Great... really knows the sport, knows the tricks and how the injuries can occur!!

My old doctor told me to quit years ago for a broken bone in my foot!!  ???

Wasn't it Hoffman who said... " can't ya just like stick a bike chain in there " talkin about his knee...

It would have to be something very dangerously serious to make most riders quit i think!!
