Burner & Mongoose Values - HELP PLEASE
« on: January 12, 2006, 01:28 PM »
Hi all  ;)

I met an old school friend and have found out that a few bikes are still around, Burner, T/A, Haro, Mongoose, waiting on other ID, all old mates rides from the early to mid 80's.

So, before they get taken to the skip or damaged etc, I have aksed for first refusal on two -

Raliegh Burner 20" - Ruffell / Team multi coloured special with top end components, skyways etc etc (price was about £600 he reckons new - built by Raleigh employee for him as a favour to his dad) not been used for nearly 20 years

Mongoose Mini race bike 20" - spec unkown but as light a f**k but thought to be top end stuff, with a Number Plate that has been signed by Mike Miranda - not been used for nearly 20 years

So, do the models ring any bells and any ideas of what they might be worth, within about £50 - £75 either way, as I want to play fair?

Any help would be great to save another few old classic bikes, as the chap that has the Burner and Goose really wants to get rid of them.

Cheers

play fair eh?

not sure about those orrible stripey mk2 burners, but the components sound good.
second hand value wise, the skyways have gotta be worth 50 quid and upwards.
maybe there is another 50 quid plus worth of bits on it too.
so there's a conservative 100, plus a fiver for the stripey frameset

the mongoose mini sounds interesting
as a complete bike it's worth way more than 75 quid!!
the older ones are worth more

if you can get those 2 for 75 quid each, then you are doing well.

to be unfair would be to give him a tenner for the two.

I've got a Team Burner - Andy Ruffell, and the components are nothing special on it. I would suggest that if your mate had it built for him, then it's not a standard bike anyway, so value would be different from one like mine. They didn't come with Tuffs on for a start. Better askt he Beard about that one.

No idea about the Mongoose, I don't even know what my own one is  :uglystupid2:

in that case 50 quid is more than fair for a team burner replica.

i think that is one of the very few bmx's that i would not buy.

not to say it is a bad bike, i just dont like them. them and moosegooses

the end of the day, MK2 Burners are all one and the same, yeah there are a few differences between a few in terms of parts and the like, but all in all a Ruff replica is just a Mag20 or a styler with different paint.

Thus rendering it plop.

what i dont like about the mk2 burners is this:

when raleigh made the mk1, it was a learning curve.
most companies were making hoopty bikes at that time.
the mk1's i have some respect for, alhough the shameless shortcut the frame builders made where the tubes met the BB was inexcusable for long established bike builders.

but when they made the mk2
they had no excuse. using fashionable aero tubing and the heavyiest chromo known to man didnt make it any better.
where i grew up, many people had a mk1 burner (xmas 83). it was just good to be on a BMX
but the mk2 burner had no credability at all, as we all knew a bit about bmx by the time they came around.

also the raleigh UK sales/top men/whoever they were all deserve a HUGE KICK IN THE B0LL0CKS for  . . . .
going to america in the 70's
seeing the "BMX craze"
thinking they know better, and giving us the Grifter.

raleigh UK was just a money making giant who couldnt care less what they sold, so long as it was selling

they'd sell matchsticks poked in a dog shit if they thought people would buy it.

they had the know how / cashflow / equipment to make a really good UK bmx company but chose to make a quick buck instead.
they even had some of the UK's top riders on board.
they never produced a good bike. except the aero pro. or was that made by tange?
mike pardon could have designed them a half decent freestyler, but instead they treated him like a peasant until he fooked off

Right the raleigh in team colours " Could " be a Team burner check the BB shell for TANGE on the bottom , if as i suspect it is a team due to teams havin white tuffs on them then its worth a fair bit as they are painted aero pro frames , should have MX1000s suntour stem , kashi aero , sugino cranks . nice bikes . however the ruffell replica was the same paint job but with a shitty frame and rubbish components. if it was made by raleigh then it may be a 531 hand made race frame , i have never seen one so worth even more

depends on condition but a Tange team would be 200 ish on the bay so 150 is fair from a mate . can you get some photos as the raleigh stuff can be a bit confusing, Retrogeezer has a team bike from a sponsored rider and that has no markings on the BB but is a aero pro without the serial apparwntly made by raleigh so photos is the only way to be sure

Hi all

Thanks for all the responses. That is pretty much what I thought, if good stuff on it possibly a factory / team build etc, and if not just a normal (ish) burner.

The chap did race though and we all used to hang out with some great rides - T/A's, MRD, GT PRO Performers, Gen 1, Turbo's, Silver Streaks, Quads, Rippers, Sport etc etc, and if I remember correctly it was a nice bike, so fingers crossed. The Goose also sounds interesting so thanks for the sort of monies quoted, it will help a lot as he is a good old mate and also knows where some other old rides are. ;)

Cheers

Jem
