Who's NEVER given up bmx?
« on: July 25, 2008, 06:48 PM »
Been thinking how cool it is that lots of people seem to be getting back on board bmx bikes after a long gap... but im wondering how manypeople on here have never given up bmx since they started it in the 80's?
I started around 83, had two older brothers who got me into it, and ive never stopped since, even if i only get to ride once a month, i still consider myself a bmx'er - bmx has dominated my life for 25 years!
So.. who else, like me, is a 'lifer' ?

In a way we're all lifers, just with big breaks in the middle.

I guess originally it was '80 - '88 and then late 2003 - now.

Have to admit though that I'm more into it now than I ever was bitd ;D.

I started in 1980 and packed in around 1986 when I left school and all my mates stopped riding (rode for 6 months on my own and it was no fun).

Unfortunately, I didn't touch a BMX or read a BMX mag again until December 1990 when I went home from Uni for Xmas and stumbled upon a copy of Invert which re-lit my fire.

Between 1990 to 2005 I was more of a mountain biker than a BMX'er (but I rode BMX a lot more between 1995 and 1997 until I broke my collarbone at Chesterfield track), but when I started racing again in 2006 I haven't done much mountain biking at all apart from a week in the Alps every year.

Ive probably told you before but mine was also a California Star , which i still own. Ive always rode a BMX I never wanted a mountain bike when they were all the rage!

started 82, Raleigh tough burner, quickly replaced with a Goose Californian, year later changed to a JMC....too small about xmas 84? got a TA, gave up in '86, left school got a motorbike...never went Mountain bike route, thought that was the demise of BMX,
Got a Halfords appollo a couple of years ago to ride in the park wit my lad. First race back a couple of months ago, had to borrow a couple of new school bikes, cos snapped the lug off my crank that holds the chainwheel. Got a redline 600a did one meeting  ... too small, borrowed a Haro RS1 did two meets, rode great, (thanks sonic) now have a Hyper Metro, just awaiting the ok from missus for a couple of hours free time to track test it, ready for next meeting in August.......Cant wait!!!!

in my mind a lifer always, it will never die,

for me started in 79/80  rode full on till 85/86  raced for a team at many big comps and won a few nice trophys in my time

and was even in the first freestyle comp at pickets lock if my memorys right ;D

where andy ruffle won the tv ;D

then after,   freestyle all the way, new this is what i loved, going big at rom with all the old skoolers was the best

time i had and with all the best from bitd,

then the massive gap :-[ done loads in my life but every now and the the old bmx

would pop up in my head, remenissing about this or that, even took my old scrap book

to one of my clubs that i run and showed the other doorman my pics ;D

started back for me taking my boy to rom 5 years ago and giving him a cheap bmx, just watching him roll around

brought back all the memories and are now involved bigger then ever,

these last two years have seen me in germany twice, countless trips up and down the country to differant skateparks,

more comps then i can remember, not for me but for my boy,

been interviewed on tv as well as billy, started painting some old skool bikes then going off big time,  probs 200 plus

bikes now and being the proudest dad ever being with my boy watching him be ten times better then i ever was :daumenhoch:

the best sport ever :4_17_5:

the only thing to stop me riding every couple of days has been an injury or a holiday abroad.

since xmas 82.
