i collect s&m and standard,
s&m = fook it and punk scene
standard= front brakes and strictness.
 i am biased as me standard out lived 2 s&m frames [ sorry but they were weak as fook]

ooppps ..have i opened a can of worms

a deserved can of worms me thinks!

and dead on! s&m were the cool company, standard were the quality product!

everyone had an s&m for two reasons:

1. they were cool
2. they were cheap (compared to standard)

I'll just say that S&M was thumbing their nose at Chrome and Neon colors and exploring ways to make frames stronger, when Nitschke, Moliterno and Schmidt were still riding their florescent yellow Haros around.

I'm not going to say S&M made the best and toughest frames around.  They merely aided in creating a counter culture of BMX that eventually became the norm.  They were a model for what the mid-school became.  A model that is still going in the new school.   I won't deny Standard as a quality product, I just feel S&M was the more influential company.

It's like Nike vs. New Balance, I suppose.  Do you guys even get New Balance across the pond?  Haha.

standard instead of s&m :'( :'( :'(

ive had both and id never have a standard again they may be stronger but thats because they weighed a fooking ton plus what other 80's rider owned company is still going today, still owned by one of the co founders, still making some of the best parts out there, leading the way in new school, refuses to have there frame forks stem and bars made abroad unlike pretty much evey other company out there,  s&m forever  :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

You might be right there ..... but Im not so sure about anymore.
S&M have "cool" and "quality" covered now, Standard just dont seem to be getting stuff out there any more

I agree with everything here except S. I gotta go with S&M on that one.

Sorry dude, I just made a list of the companies I could think of rather than what was the best of the era (perhaps I misunderstood the point of the original post).

I agree though, back in the 90s Standard was much better quality than S&M (but that was also reflected in the price tag), but not so sure these days as Standard seems to have been pretty quiet for a couple of years, while S&M has gone from strength to strength and the quality of S&M stuff is now super high.
