It's a subject that's been debated many times over the years but 86 seems to be the general consensus

I think it depends on opinion like most things bud, I would consider anything 70's-80's as old school and 90 on as mid. One mans old school is another mans mid I suppose.

Also I think it depends on the age of the person you ask as that would obviously influence things. I remember a lad I know buying a Fiesta RS Turbo and he called it old school. Now to me old school RS's would be a MKI or MK II Mexico or RS 2000's.

It's a strange one I'll give you that!

you can ride 87/88 bike in the OS race series so would that not indicate they is OS year too.

Barry the Baptist in Lock Stock had the right idea "if it looks old ..........", so you can't really define stuff by date.

But if I had to try to define by date, to me, new school started when bikes got clamp on stems, threadless headsets and v-brake mounts, so circa 1995. Old school is pre-95, new school is 95 onwards.

I don't think "mid-school" bikes need their own category as they can be placed in OS or NS.

i agree with ratty. if 86 is the cut off, then i'm not really an old school rider. i got my first real bmx in december 85 and didn't start to compete until 87.

I bet you that about every 5 years it will move up a year or two:

it used to be 85

Now its 86

in about five years it will be 87 or 88 dependent on numbers and popularity

and so on and so on........

It has to in order to regenerate and keep people's interest for the years to come and to make room for all of the mid school riders who in 10 years will be considered by the popular as old school.

Did that make any sense??

up to 85 for me, depending on the model. i stop at 84 but wouldn't kick a jmc out of bed for farting. threw my 85 cruiser at pete quad for being too young, gt's were shit after 83.

I also think it's worth considering if you rode freestyle or raced as racing came first so as it's obviously older. I'd still consider a 87-89 Performer as old school but someone who raced like J.T. wouldn't, as he says, all GT's of this age are shyt

lol....like scary said, four yrs ago the cut off was 85....so that sticks for me, we cant keep changing the date ffs, in ten years time the cut off will be this years new school....

I'd kind of go with Flatcap here. but not sure I'd take old school past 87.

There's probably not a set date though, as I suppose they may well overlap.

I would consider bikes like Skyways to be old school and things like Hoffmans to be mid. They were both available at the same time though late 80s early 90s.

street rider as were all my mates bitd, we did go racing a couple of times but wasn't my cup 'o T. tracks were fun, but being told what to do whilst under supervision didn't quite work well for us little bastards..

on another note, performers were sh1t

I had asked this question last year sometime - when did New School start and what would that be called when we have somethign newer?

Going by previous responses, New School started circa 2000. Can an 8 year old frame still be classed as new school?

How long does the New School window stay open and will it get renamed when the new window is open...
