measure the inside of the rim , take that measurement and divide by 36    thats your hole gap measurement
pick the spoke hole nearest the valve hole  to start then mark with a marker pen and drill out
some original holes might even come into play so use them.the old unused holes just ignore.

A 48 would be better as the spacing would be even . wouldnt it? I think.

hes only 4 steve and has one of them mongoose mity mini's
but as they only for training and hes shredding already i need to sort his gearing out and need a smaller rear cog
as can only go down to a 16 as the front is 28 and hits the coping when he rolls into a mini quarter
plus hes just to small for a 16 inch park bike

you want a 48 hole cassette hub

-your rim wants a hub - if its a 16 hole rim, with 8 holes per side

=a 48 hole has 24 holes per side

24 divided by 8 =a nice round number in 3 -sweet

3 equates to lace one hole, miss 2

:)I do have a 32 hole  built up 20"wheelset with a rear cassette hub somewhere.Unused and unsealed though.Takes a standard Shimano pattern cog,so could take a 12t rear cog......
