newbie seatpost Q

Hey.

I haven't built bikes since I was a kid and just getting back into it.

Probably an obvious question to you guys but...

I have an elina UL seat/post that basically refuses to go any further than about 1 inch inside the seat tube of my '93 GT pro Series.

I was thinking about greasing the post or tube a little and seeing if that helped but thought it might not be a good idea.

Then, I saw a youtube video of a guy doing a new school build from scratch and he put grease in the seat tube!

Ok, so,  can I do it? Will it help to get the post into the tube?

You can put grease on it - no problem.

Also check inside the seat tube of the GT. There might be a burr or something preventing the post going in

i put grease or anti-seize on all my posts dude

if its very tight or theres dirt or whatever stopping it "sliding in" you could clean out the seat tube,

Felt around inside and couldn't feel anything the other night but I'll have another try and possibly inspect with a torch and then a file (if there's a burr).
It's pretty tight in there and I did notice that the original GT seatpost is slightly slightly slightly thinner. It had a mm or two of rattle space when placed  inside the seatpost of an 83 redline 600a.

Oh well, I'll investigate further and get some grease on too.
