Does anyone know what year the lug on the forks first started?

and has anyone had one ground off and filled?

I believe 85, but Stodgy and Quad Pete will probably narrow it down to what day of the week it was with Performer knowledge ;)

I used a linisher to grind away a lug on a bike and then a file, take it easy though or you'll end up with a flat spot

Nope, it's like this
84 frames have the rear stays fixed to the centre of the top tube in fron tof the seat so the centre tube is higher - forks were same as race forks.

late 84 early 85 this was altered and the stays were level with the cetre tube so your foot would be flat, this was the point when the lug was added and the fork ends dropped below the drop outs I believe as mine above

86 a rear brake stay was added behind the bottom bracket
