Help, I wanna get rid of a Suntour Coaster !
« on: April 20, 2007, 10:14 AM »
Okay, I have a v. nice pair of NOS Yellow Tuff 2's, with the older style steel hubs, but they currently have a heavy heavy coaster brake, what's the cheapest and easiest way to remove it and replace with a standard freewheel ? I don't want to drill out the hub btw, I want to keep it 'as is'......

Here's the hub.....

Would one of these do the trick (ACS Freewheel convertor) ???

Can't you try swapping the pair of em for a pair without a coaster?  saves all the faffing around

believe mne, they are minty !! apart from a couple of scratches and a tingy chip on on spoke (you can see it in one of the pics), so i'd be hard pushed to find the same w/o the coaster..... :-\

I wouldn't go for the acs freecoaster kit Matt, it weighs a fair bit and is only available as 17T.

Mr. Orb's recommendation is way better.

You can lose the anchor arm then, too, and you still get the freecoasting action for fakies.

But that aint gunna save you much weight is it? the coaster guts will still be in there.

i guess the only way get the weight out is to 'drill' the hub out, so there will need to be a compromise somewhere ? I think i'll have to go for the easy option......ORB's first one  ;)

thanks ORB, thanks gents !!!  :daumenhoch:

LOL, I was gonna say roll-backs! ;)

(I got a coaster tuff here with the ACS freecoaster kit on it. Worked well, but I ended up with a 46T chainring on the front to get the gearing right. Plus it is, as Chris Moeller might've said, "HAF"...)

does the whole gubbins remain on the hub? because if it stays more or less the same, but then has a freewheel instead of a cog, it will just get heavier? or not ???
