Brands versus brands.....

I have seeen a little discussion on brands of the midschool andthought it may be a good idea to address what they stood for at the time andd direction they seemed to want to head in.
Since pricing of these products originally seems to have been forgoten.

S&M
I cant say this for sure, but from what I understood at the early 90s S&M wanted to offer "blue collar working class bikes .... no frills... good bang for the buck"

Standard
I think there goal was to produce very strong bikes and to try and not only make them strong but to look into new ways of design and have an image that said "tech/strict/dialed"

Hoffman
I have no idea what direction hoffman bikes wanted to go , maybe in the middle of standard and S&M ? ....

what do you guys think?

 s&m to me were race , dirt and anarchy.
standard were strict techno ramp [ well , until the sta and mx]

stodgy will hate me for this, but i thought the condor was a terrible frame.. perfect for matt and vert riding, useless for everything else!!   the big daddy was a bit more like it. but not a standard..

all 3 for me on there own merits
first of all they where hard to damage bar a dent or ding
designed to be thrashed ,bashed and to last
built for the rider and designed by them.
weight was a bit of an issue looking back i guess but i never noticed  back then.
i never rode an s&m  but you only needed to see who was riding them to no they was right up there.
price  o the price  they did fetch a pretty penny.

component wise, the VG stuff was top bollox design, the bmx version of bang and olofsen cool cool stuff

s&m made cool classic style bmx frames and had a humourous team

standard was geeky as hell, overengineered and generally horrible looking - in my opinion

as for hoffman, well as rad as matt is i never really knew anyone that wanted one of those frames

The DIY nature of the company gave a feeling of “I could do that”, and in fact, many tried thanks to S&M.

Musical equivalent: German techno / Kraftwork, or maybe Yngwie Malmsteen (guitar soloing god)
Ultra tech, pretty much untouchable riding. Uncompromising attention to design and detail, regardless of cost and weight.

Musical equivalent: David Hasselhoff. It’s all about the front man, however bad the music!

Hoffman just wanted to make stuff that didn't break, and was as stable as hell on Vert...ah, so stuff for himself then. 

It's all beautifully made and I must admit, I really enjoyed riding Fuzzy's Condor - they are lovely and big.
