i dont agree, look how good richs quad looks with them tuffs.

what i would admit, is if you are a serious racer, and really want to get the edge, then maybe dont use tuffs.

anything else, tuffs rule.

For looks yes I agree Tuffs look good on any bike (race or freestyle) - but for practical use it's spokes for racing and tuffs for freestyle for me

modern old school rules dictates "tuffs on everything"

but actually bitd people rode on both.

and by the end of the 80's tuffs were very much in the minority

spoked wheels were always commonplace in freestyle. were the norm by 86-87. and were always better wheels.

and not just for serious racing either
serious anything bmx, alloys were always the way to go. in the beginning some knew that. eventually everyone knew it.

i started riding in 83 and rode right up until the end of 89
i didnt see the glorious tuff wheel years that people hold in high regard
i had tuffs, but never a complete set. pegs would murder the hubs on them.

tuff wheels do personify a certain era of bmx. and they will always suit an 80's ride. some bikes even benefit from tuffs! take daves haros - you couldnt imagine a haro replica that had alloy wheels.

however put mags on anything after the 80's and it's not good. in my opinion.

the black/white rule of tuffs for freestyle and spokes for racing is just not how it was.
look in the old action bikes.

as for what is "acceptable" put what you like on whatever bike you like (so long as the year is right!)

after 85 i would image people would run fs880's, up until boas came along.

i'm well sorted now anyway. spokes for the aero reflex (this will be my rider) and i just bought a '85 master in green with nearly all green parts - including tuffs and mx1000's just so i can drool over it as this is what i really wanted BITD, but my parents wouldnt fork out that sort of cash so i had to "make do" with my pink rickman freestyler (which i really,really wish i still had). mind, still wish i had the hutch pro racer which i picked up for £40 complete (hutch bars/araya aeros etc) towards end of the '80s when people were giving away decent gear. thanks for all your feedback - much appreciated

Tuff's are the wheels that you couldn't afford (well parents couldn't afford) back when you were a lad unless you were one of hte spoiled lot,and now when your our age (30ish) you can spend your own hard earned cash  and get the wheels you dreamed off instead of making do with cheaper acorn mag wheels

So, make your dreams come true and buy some real skyway tuff wheels
