Mons coverage #3 The first “Jam” part 1
« on: January 25, 2007, 03:32 PM »
These are scans from BMX Action bike, issue 36. This was the first BMX “jam” with no set times, compulsory tricks and all that. It came from a very different place to where BMX freestyle was at that time. You many notice that the “local pros” weren’t at this comp. Well they were at the start; Campbell, Ruffell, Damon, Mackenzie (from what I remember) but they were all on Prolite (Neil had just left to ride for Holeshot) and they all came in the Prolite van with Pete Hawkins. There was some kind of falling out with Hawkins and he wouldn’t let any of his riders enter the comp. He even told Neil that he’d take away his shoes if he rode (Pete had given them when he was on skyway). I cant really say why Hawkins left the contest with all his riders but I think it was something to do with “bullshit” zine (More scans of that on the way!).

Btw, do you think BMXA had something going on with Vincent? The 2 Vincent riders both got 2 of the 3 big pictures and they both got mini interviews, along with Bernie Vincent. Maybe I’m just bitter cos I got beaten by Adam Dudley! Ha ha

Alex - great scans. Yep, that BS Zine got Pete in a twist and pulled us all from the contest. Maybe it was the picture of him with CC in the Passion Wagon that sent him over the edge. He blamed it on the fact that he saw the locals smoking a doobie and he didn't want his team exposed to that sort of behaviour. We were so bumbed out, that's when we lost interest in the whole sponsorship gig. Pete dropped Tony and me off at Waterloo station to get the train back to Sutton. We were so pissed oof that we went into Casey Jones for a burger and left our bikes outside unlocked, when we returned, the bikes were gone. Oh well, that's too bad. We didn't care at that point. Everything went pear shaped after that.

Interesting therory on Vincent and BMXA having a side deal, makes sence.

Thats nuts to hear a bit of the "Hawkins" story from the other side. Once the Van had drove off, I never heard any more from your side (apart from when Hawkins called up James' Dad and tried to get money or something out of him. James's Dad put Pete right in his place and made him say sorry to Mon). I didnt really get involved with why you all went, I was just bracing myself for a B group with Fraz Cambell and Carlo Griggs and I ended up getting second, (cos they couldnt ride)

Vincent used to advertise in the mag.......was probably enough.  I'll ask Pepi.

Great scans.

Brings back memories.
Recognise my old racing mate Andy 'Tim March' Lee from Banbury in one of the pictures.
Same age group at Banbury X-ups.

fookin cool that nice to see the mag again got mine out had a read,  what is  cool is the background story behind something like this , as a rider bitd i looked as the guys in the shoot as hero's  and mons jams were the conversation points amongst me and me mates for months, being up north we never got to get involved in the main scene, to read stuff like this from the guys involved is  brill,  :daumenhoch:,  i never  got my oddesey parts from BMXAB for star letter issue 52,, cheap skates   :LolLolLolLol:

I remember this issue. The first though that came to mind when I saw the heading was Jess' comment. Yeah, I remember it off by heart: It's rad. It's bloody mad. I'm so glad Darren won...
I love Action Bike.

'How to turn your BMX into a mountain bike' Oh dear!

Check those three in the comments, influential then, influential now-

Darren, went on to form 'A4' etnies etc distributor, top bloke

Mon, infamous purveyor of skateboards etc in Oxford

Jess, went on to become shaker and mover in the rollerblading industry (another 'oh dear' !!)

Finally Sorted out a few photos from that day.
All taken on a 110 camera, so poor quality.

My best performance to date, with a win in the U16's!!!

A few of us from Vincent Frames recently met up for the first time in 24 years,
and hope to be at the Radbmx MK10 next month,
hopefully with Bernie Vincent.

Great Thread , great to see those shots again.

Cheers, Adam

Oh yeah, its been eating me up for the last 20 years  ;D

I saw Adam at MK yesterday, we were in the same Moto. What are the chances of that? It was good to see him riding again, esp as he was riding a "real" Old school bike (not like me  :-[).

;D yeah pretty random that you ended up racing against Adam again...although I think you probably beat him this time  ;)
Got some photos online of your race, follow the link on the VF website....
oh and check out Adam's crash video
