Haro 84' master, what stem should I use?
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:52 AM »
I am starting to build my 84' Haro and not sure what stem should go on it? I have a couple of Group 1 stems but didn't they come later? I would prefer not to use a Group 1 as they are really heavy, im building this bike as light as I can. I also have the correct bars so don't really want to go down the one piece Vector bars route if poss. Any help would be great, thanks!

Doesn't really matter. I just thought when I bought the frame, perfect I have a group 1 stem. Then I realised how heavy they were!

Ah, plenty to choose from then,!  ;D

Out of interest, what would have been the correct part fitted to an 84' leaving the factory?

Sorry, I missed your post asking to know.

There has been some discussion on the stem. The first test of a complete '84 Master showed a Tioga stem, but it did say this would be changed for production. Jay has a test where the stem is quoted as being a Suntour Power stem and I must admit, I'm now coming around to this being fact. I thought that it was an Anlun (but not the same type as on the sport), but I think now the suntour makes more sense.

Thanks Phil for your input and Paul for the Link that's damn handy to have. So what is the stem in the top pic? Here are the bars I will be fitting once chromed.

Those bars on dan's '84 are VC8's and the stem is an Anlun (as supplied on the '84 Sports). If I remember correctly he used to have just Bob Haro bars on that '84 and has since updated the picture, but not the text.

Dunno about a suntour stem but according to the 1984 haro catalog it was a forklifter , they probably changed it without notice  :-\ , Like they do  ;)

The catalogue is a late '84 one - look at the picture, does that look like a forklifter?

No attitude - just asking a question. Please don't read something into my posts that's not there, ok  :daumenhoch:

The catalogue is from '84, but I've never seen a complete '84 factory picture with the forklifter stem. The forklifter stem had a potts mod and personally, I'd never put a pott's mod stem on an '84 - my opinion only of course.

Edit: I should re-phase that to say The forklifter stem had a potts mod and personally, I'd never put a pott's mod stem on an '84 unless it's a Redline RL20 - my opinion only of course.

I think you've both been making the same point and prove how difficult interpretation of the written word can be  :daumenhoch:

Mivvi, it's your bike, you put whatever stem you want to build it with

snav69 - When I build my bikes, I'm interested in detail (nit-picking as you call it), that's just the way I am and I'm not going to apologise for it.

Hey, chill out lads. There was a lot of changes at the times of these bikes being built and a lot of different views on it. You have both given me all the info I needed and I appreciate the help. Shake hands and lets just get on with each other for the sake of this great hobby. Thanks again all! Mivvi.  ;)
