84 was a full chromo frame - I can never work our how to to find my posts but one of mine has a few close up 83 cali shots and someone very kindly posted some links to some radbmx.co.uk pages with detailed spec sheets for 83 expert / mini / cali......

I found the bars the hardest part to find and have settled on some CW types.

When I got my Cali in '83/'84 (I forget..) I bought some CW copy bars and gave the Mongoose bars away because I didn't think they were big enough  :D
I don't think they were the Pro Class bars I see on a lot of builds here, I'm sure they were smaller, like the ones in the following test:

Californian Spec sheets/Bike Test (from a 1983 magazine):

Duncan

I done exactly the same thing with my 83 Californian, outed the bars and got some CWs and yes they were the same as the ones in the pix and not the pro-class ones.

how much would I expect to pay for some 2nd hand pro class bars?

CW Vert-ego style £22 posted

cant really afford to spend a lot, as the bike has cost too much already.

Anybody out there looking to build a Cali, DONT buy a pre-built one.
There has been two nice ones in the for sale forum recently.

I believe that Renthal bars also came as standard on many Mongoose - got a picture of a Cali from bitd with Renthal bars somewhere but can't find it at the moment  ::)

As far as i know the renthal bars only came as standard on the uk supergoose 3. So depends on how original you want the bike or what you can afford ;) ;) ;)

I actually picked up this '84 Cali', and parts out of the for sale section from winnit93 (scott). Thanx buddy.  :daumenhoch:

As you can see i've already got a start on some parts for it. With the pro class bars as well  :). Thanx for the links and replies lads. Could anyone post up the pics of the stem and grips i need to be looking out for please? All the pics i seem to see of Cali's have the stem pad covering and hiding it.  Thanx again  :) G.

nice parts,
would it be rude to ask how much it cost you?

so I could work out how much to pay for pro class bars?

Thanks
Chris

ps check out cd's cali for a picture of the sr stem that came with it,
and the grips are mongoose one's which I havent found a supplier of, as of yet.

I did see the stem in one of the links Chris, just couldn't work out if it was the original part. Basically i'm looking for an Sr stem in black/silver then? Cool  :daumenhoch:.  I'll probably run a polished Sugino D.b turbo stem on it for now anyhow. Don't know why but i was expecting the original part to be a bit more like the pro class item  :idiot2:.  Once again thanx lads  ;D

keep an eye on the for sale section or checkout http://www.raleighburner.com
for sale section, as the burner came with the same sr stem (sr-ms422). Thats where I sourced mine from. cheaper than ebay

Good set of chaps2.

I'm already watching that one  :LolLolLolLol:. Ash from Poole. Sound bloke, i've had a couple of bits of him over the time. With that i'd polish the top like a mirror and would get the rest of the clamp coated in black.  I'll see how it goes.  G     :daumenhoch:

If you find a sr handlebar stem go for the worst looking and cheapest one you see - mint ones go for heavy money for an originally cheap part.......30mins with some autosol and wet-and dry and it will look brand new......matt black hammerite is good for the bottom part of the stem.....

The parts set you bought look very good......I don't think the spider is orginal though ?!? Also the break cable outers on calis were off white transparent if you really want to get specific......and sr pedals are hard to find for good money - I settled for some 80s NOS gt platforms for about £10

the spider looks proclass to me, same as mine.

I got my sr stem £8 delivered, was either off here or the burner site.

Chris

ps: that bike not together yet cd? Hows about a piccy of how it is now?

Got my package through the door today.  Thanx to winnit93.  :daumenhoch:
Overall very nice condition. Plenty to keep me occupied over the winter months.
Yeah Chris the spider is Pro class. Don't think i'll use it in the build tho. Or maybe? Have to see.
Scott did send me the old set of original clear dia compe cables along as well. Won't be going with them either. I picked up a set nos, not so long back for my Leary turbo. So i have a new set sat here because i decided not to use them either. May go onto turbo for museum pics, or for a show 'n' shine. But not my kinda thing.
I will be keeping my eye out for a stem thanx lads, but decided to take my time over this build, so there's no rush. First on my list will be a head set i think, get the frame and forks connected.
Then will start the build.  ;D

Are the cable outers in Ok condition if so v interested.

Chris,

My build is going dead slow - all the parts are curently being electrolysed......... I looked into getting the frame re-chromed.......ouch.......for some reason my crank has all the chrome worn away where the word 'mongoose' is......I was going to paint it but I don't think any calis came with black cranks.......  :( .

Decided to build mine up, like I said b4, i autosoll'ed the rust now down to nickle in places.
B*llocks to it, polish it up a bit and a new set of decals, will be good enough for a rider....
And I can always make it better, once complete. It is 22 yr old frame remember.

Parts laid out last week pre build up. Looks Crap I know. Got some cheapy skinwalls, and built up skyways with axle rebuild kits since. Parts bill currently clocking in at around £250 - Any wannabe Cali owners please take my advice 'Buy a PreBuilt One' at least 3 been for sale in last few weeks.

now together less bars, chain and brakes & decent decals. Will get some piccys in daylight.

PS. Gremlin - got a pic on my PC somewhere of your frame in a built in a previous life with winnit - with black mags on it.
will either located it or find the post for you.
