I have always had front on the right, except when I did BMX.
Miami Hoppers was the reason for the swap, I could only do it turning the bars left, so I needed the front on the left.
It was handy for some ramp kickturns too, before I got a coaster.

I've come a cropper on the mountainbike in the past because of brake-lever flashbacks :)

ooohhh, the last time this question was posted up it almost caused a riot  :LolLolLolLol:

I have only ever ridden with front brake on the left, back on the right.  Even the continental road racers used to ride with it that way round so that they could brake with the left hand and change up or down the gears with the right, not so important now with STI and Ergo levers  :-\

it would fry my brain to mess about with all iv ever used , which is front right , back left
i ride motorcycle to which all modern ones are set up like this to front break on left bar , but can see why if yer runnin rear only some may like it other way as yer could get more grip with right hand
like my back break real tight hardly any lever movement before it works , great till yer knock yer rim out a little  ;D

BITD we set our bikes up like the one's in the mags....usually the USA mags.

They allways seem to ride left front brake.

My bikes are still set up like that now

rear brake on the right lever for me.

Took my MTB in for repair a while back and they 'corrected it for me' putting the rear on the left because they 'obviously didn't set it up right when they sold it to me'.

Sadly there was no compensation for their 'error' so I had to put it back again when I got home, just like I had the day I bought it. Hmmmm.....  ::)

As far as I knew all bikes from Raleigh tomahawks to Aero Pros always had the brakes set up from the factory with the rear left and front right, they all cant be wrong.
I have 2 raleigh Bombers and they are the same.

I guess it was the yanks who had it the wrong way around and some of you guys followed suit with the american bikes being imported..lol

Its sometimes tied in with the direction you air. Most people air with the rear brake on the top (air to the left, rear brake on the right). The obvious exeption to this is Fiola as he had his rear brake at the bottom, meaning he could to "eddie airs" (bottom foot of, top hand off, back when you pulled the rear brake when you did a one footer). For a while there were vert riders with a rear brake on both sides to they could also "eddie air".

btw, UK factory bikes are set up with the rear brake on the left for when you are riding on the road and make a right turn. You will have your right arm out to turn right but as you pull into the middle of the road its better to be able to pull the rear brake to slow down, and not the front one as this might get a little hairy with only one hand on the bars. This is also why bikes from the US are usually the other way (cos they ride on the other side of the road)

Well i live in the south of france and all the bikes here are left rear brakers and the drive obviously on the opposite side of the road so im confused bud :LolLolLolLol:

Back brake on the right and front brake on the left.

Needed to be this way to do "Lawnmowers" and also original cherry pickers where you pulled the bike up of the ground (assuming you crossed the bars when you laid the bike down).

Other tricks of the top of my head are Woody Hops, Miami Hoppers (+ hop hops).

Obviously, you could have the brakes the other way and do all those tricks the opposite way too.

Not sure I ever saw anyone do an opposite Cherry Picker though.  Did anyone else?
