Can anybody help?
« on: April 15, 2019, 10:49 PM »
Hi there,

Never posted here but been a member for some years. My 9 year old wants a Raleigh BMX for his birthday. I've found a bit of a project on ebay but can't find any info on the serial number, it seems to be 8467059, I thought it was suppose to start with a letter. Can anybody offer any advice?

Thanks

Ashley

Welcome to Rad Ashley...

A pic of the f&f would help mate... numbers mean nothing without pics.  :daumenhoch:

Bottom tube looks very thin (the one going vertical from the top of the BB in your pic)..is it flattish/deep section ?

It’s not a Raleigh as their serial numbers begin with N, so we’re narrow it down.

It’s a low end bike, judging by the one piece chainwheel, but not a Piranha, they don’t have serial numbers, we’re getting closer now.

As the others have said, we really need to see some pics of the frame, particularly dropouts, any gusseting etc.

Probably a Stinger Aero, or along those lines.

Ashley, does your son really want a Raleigh or does he want a bike a 9yr old can use?

I see this a lot, dad loves Burners from Bitd which I genuinely have no issue with as Burners have a place in BMX history in the UK. Anyway, son wants one too to be like dad, then when they get one they don't ride it as it's too heavy and cumbersome, especially for a 9yr old.

There are companies out there that specialise in kids bikes to encourage them to ride more like Frog, Isla, Early Rider, Hoy etc and every one has the same ethos, make it as light as possible with scaled down components for smaller hands, arms, legs and feet :coolsmiley:

I would honestly advise you to look for a mini race BMX like I found for my son. Absolutely designed for kids, light as hell and fast as fook on a track and road

That bike has 8 days to go and despite the fact is is not a Burner, it will not sit at £20 for too long as it already has 3 bids :-\

If he's tall for his age he needs a 24" Hoy Bonalay or Frog 62 which while they will cost you over a ton to buy s/h they will ride morning noon and night then you will get close to what you paid back in a year's time when they need the next model up.

Again, I'm not bashing Burners. I just know kids should have kids bikes designed for them as they will love them. My 7yr old wouldn't get off the track at MK last year on his race bike and my 10yr daughter loves her 24" Hoy and can't wait for the weekend to ride it.......
Still limping......

Spen69 is correct. Get him a bike he can ride.  :)

It would still be nice to buy an old 80s BMX you can build with your son as a project for you both to enjoy.  :daumenhoch:

Cheers everybody. Just looked leaving work and saw all the replies. Will read them all properly tonight but from what I see it is as I expected.

Spen - I totally agree. He says he wants a Raleigh but I told him it will be too heavy for what he wants. The idea was to buy him something light and modern to do what he wants then buy him a beaten up old Raleigh to do up and keep. I myself have a Mongoose Californian. He doesn't want one of those!!!

Here you go  :coolsmiley:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hoy-Bonaly-24-Kids-Mountain-Bike-Red-Yellow-8-speed/333151466700?hash=item4d915ff4cc:g:pSwAAOSwJ7FcreCh

Thanks again, I'll look at those with him. He has a Haro at the moment but there isn't much to him to be honest and he struggles with that, although he is getting more confident, one of these might suit him better.

That's the plan but I don't want to get stung buying some rubbish because I don't know what I've been looking for. You guys have been very helpful. Cheers. The one on 'fleabay' is the one I was looking at. I'll give it a miss. Funnily enough I nearly bought one last week which had a similar serial number. I'd had a few too many glasses of wine, I'm pleased I missed out on that one too now.
