Mid School Race framesets (1989-1996) - Hyper Hornets x 2
« on: December 08, 2016, 10:59 AM »
Just managed to bag a couple of Hyper Framesets taking my total to 5!

Chrome Hyper Hornet
Blue Hyper Hornet

These 2 are being added to my collection which includes a Chrome Hyper Metro, Purple Hyper Metro and a Blue Hyper Hornet

Chrome one is being painted 'black' (and i'm removing the canti mounts) and the other is staying blue now

Black is now the obvious choice from that list - thank you

I'm also going to badge the Hornet up as a Metro (as Del has those decals)

Thanks for this the museum doesn't show that many colour variations but I since retraced your threads and the 'Mr Magoo' thread covers all of the colours mentioned

Yes the chrome Metro has fatter rear stays (I thought it was because that is the only Pro XL frameset)

Im sure Del could make you hornet decals for the top tube.  :daumenhoch:

Thanks I might just do that as I was conscious that I was potentially rebadging incorrectly but everything else with the decals looks to be exactly the same between the 2 models

The easiest way to spot the difference is the BB shell and head tube. Metro's were american made and the head BB's and Head tubes had wider rounded "steps" in them. Hornets have short sharp steps. The next give away is the quality of welding. Because Hornets were made in Taiwan the welds are not as good as the Metro's were. Finally the geometry is different but the other give aways are so clear you normally never need to resort to comparing seat angles, chain stay shape, and top tube lengths.

Hornet BB:

Metro BB: (you can just see the wider and rounder step on the Metro in the below pic)

Thanks for the Hyper information Jon (I still need some Mongoose Solution advice as that frameset has just turned up from the states) see my other post

I've also just bagged another 2 red Hypers tonight (this time 2 Metros) from the same seller as the Hornets taking my Hyper total to 7.  I might be a Hyper specialist soon!
