Fork Crown Race Query
« on: May 24, 2016, 10:31 PM »
I've always found the fork race to be tight as a nun's chuff and require some strategic twatting to remove .... Do they need to be this tight?
The reason I ask is the one I intended to use , just slips on and has a little play in it . I'm pretty sure it's original to the headset I'm using it with (Tange).... I've also tried a different race on the forks which needs knocking on a bit and has no play .
Will the 'loose' fitting one be ok when assembled ?

You want it nice and tight ideally.  :daumenhoch:

Here's the headset...

I've assembled it , without the thin washer and all seems nice and tight .

Thought it might have been cobbled together as I hadn't seen one with the thick threaded lock ring ??

They should be a snug fit, but ideally can be removed by tapping them with a happer/screwdriver combo in case you need to re-paint/re-chrome your forks. I've occasionally dremmeled a small amount from the inside of the crown race or shaved a bit off the forks to make it fit

There are two sizes of crown race 26.4mm and 27mm, the standard one is 26.4 IIRC.

Sounds like you have a 27mm crown race, I'd just use one from another headset that fits correctly rather than shim it.
