Zima 'sliding post' prototype
« on: December 02, 2015, 12:23 PM »
I've been over BMX building since MK ... happens every year  ::) but I was lucky enough to get offered THE prototype sliding post Zima frame from Olly Hall ... who seems to be even more over it than I was! LOL

Apparently this is a really lightweight frame!

So the chrome one I had has found a new home and this is my winter project now  :)

[ Attachment: You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I'd like it to end up something like Sen's as the frame is going back to raw ...

[ Attachment: You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Its currently in the hands of Old Father Time .. aka Phil Sawzall who is fettling some brake mounts and cable guides back on. He's also making me a new seatpost :-) I need to get all the chrome bits stripped and raw then off to SBD to get any non brazed welds coloured up ... then back to me for s special take on the decals ... then a clear coat.

I've got all the bits saved from my last Zima with the addition of some raw G-Sport bars  >:D

I've got it all planned out you see  :slayer:

* U P D A T E D *

All done :-)

Are you going to get 990's put back on? Or run it with a bolt on brakes?

Phil has brazed the mounts back on for me ... but there was no sign of cable guides so I'm not having any

When she's ready to go to SBD give me a shout :daumenhoch:

cheers Gaz ... but as a prototype I think she has to be raw, rough and ready  :)

That said I will need to Dan to colour up the welds on the forks to make them looks brazed to match the frame

Steve mentioned this frame in the June 1994 Ride mag when they did a focus on the workshops of Xposure and Zima.

If it was 15 months old in June 1994 then it was built in approx March / April 1993

I've not seen or held the frame yet but Olly told me that Steve built this prototype out of lighter tubing than the normal Zimas. There's been a couple of mentions in Ride about Zima building some lightweight trails frames so this could have been Steve's experiment into lighter weight frames as well as the sliding post ... I will have to ask him  :daumenhoch:

The first production model had an intergrated seat post clamp but the prototype has a seperate clamp. I'm not sure if its one Steve made or if he just borrowed it from something.

The original Zima post was missing but new radster Trav77 had one so he did me some pics for Phil to make me one.

The seat clamp was custom made Edward his dad machined it and id say it's half the weight of a normal Zima it's not much diff to today's frame weights when you pick it up your eyes and brain get confused as you expect the normal back pain but it's like lifting a can of Stella  :daumenhoch:

Also unlike your sliding post Zima this 1's seat tube is full fat size, it has a plastic shim
