'87 Dominguez Strike Zone
« on: June 29, 2015, 10:26 PM »
This one is my last build guys and I am unsure where I want to go with it.

It is a 1987 Diamond Back Strike Zone, and the original owner stripped it, removed the chain guard tabs, and left it raw for God knows how long. It is great shape condition wise, no dents, dings, cracks or rewelds, nice clean drops and keyhole.

It has a bridge for a calliper but comes with the U brake mounts, which are stamped Suntour, and the fixed cable stop. I do have the Suntour roller brake, plus a few other items that came with it.

So, I did have in mind to chrome the frame and fork and get Dan to work his magic and put the correct colour blue over the top, leaving the rear stays section chrome, and the fork chrome. I knew getting the correct bars was going to be nigh on impossible but, a set came up on the Museum a couple of days ago and I had to grab them. They are in original survivor condition with the white paint over the chrome and the original Dominguez decals on, although very 'patina'd'.

My question to you Guys is, would you chrome and paint it, strip the bars and have them chromed too, or, would you emery the frame down and get it clear coated raw, and keep the bars survivor, adding survivor parts to build it with  ???

The frame and fork....

The bars are on their way to me but, this is them....

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Yes buddy. I wasn't looking to doing the bike era correct, just mix it up a little. The '87 was all paint, including the fork, but I wanted the fork chrome. I don't like the '87/'88 decals either, and was going to fit some DB prism's on it.

 ;D  Thanks guys.

I really had the two options I have in mind and wanted to know if I should just clean the frame and keep it raw OR strip the original finish bars and get it chromed and powdered over the top  ???

+1! You've already done lots of sweet-looking chrome builds so I'd also go for the raw option!! :daumenhoch:

I was out of bmx in 85/86 so these freestylers or outside of my knowledge zones, but that works!! White body with splatter, chrome tail & forks & bars. Really like that idea.
When I was born, the world was a far simpler place.
It was all just cops and robbers.
And BMX.

They did Rob. I had in mind of doing the Frame chrome and powdering over it in the original colour blue upto, just onto, chain and seats stays. I wanted to keep the Fork chrome if I done that, and do the bars chrome. I don't like the Pink colour and glad I was getting out of BMX before the pastel colours really tried to take hold. Just not my thang  :-\

I'm just unsure if I should strip the original finish off the bars  ???  If I don't, then I think the frame set should stay raw  ???

I'm just really looking to see what others do if they had it, and before I go ahead with anything  :daumenhoch:

This a custom '88. I had in mind the same thing with the finish on the frame and fork but do the bars chrome.

I also wanted the original blue on it and keep away from Black/Chrome

I'd go white, white frame, forks and bars; white freestylers look cool  :coolsmiley:

Im inclined to say survivor build Terry but a raw frame doesnt really look survivor to me, especially clear coated.
I think in this case i would treat it as a signature/limited edition/high end bike they never built and go the chrome and powder route  :)

I do like raw frames but not on this. I would personally go original blue/chrome with chrome forks and chrome bars if those are the only 2 options  :daumenhoch:

Chrome and baby blue all the way Terry.  The frame being raw, to me, kjnda says the survivor route is out. I bling it the fook out. And make it drip with high end parts (if I had the budget)

Thanks for the input guys, it's very helpful  :daumenhoch:

I have spent a few hours sanding it down with emery cloth to tidy it up a bit. I see what you mean about not putting a clear coat on it Clint.

It looks like the original finish bars will get stripped then  :D

Jaymz and Deeman, would you do the bars chrome or blue  ???

I think both would look fantastic Terry, although I think Clint may have the perfect answer above ^^^.  :daumenhoch:

:daumenhoch:

According to the seller, the bars are chrome with paint over the top, original from new. If so, I will just ask Dan to do them the same but in the original DB blue.
