After the Curtis, I thought I would have a go at a survivor. Always liked the shape of the JMC; they look fast even when they are standing still!
I have enjoyed this one. I thought I would play with a few colours (gold / red) and to mix things up, use parts that I didn’t on the Curtis. I was unsure how it would come out, but I quite like the result…but I will await your expert opinion!
A few honourable mentions.
I was originally going to use the wheelset on the Curtis. The rims were in a terrible state; buckled and deep gouges down the sides. I sent them to Steve (Animal) and what he sent back, I remain convinced, were not the same rims. Totally straight, not a scratch in sight. Great workmanship.
In the spirit of a survivor build, I wanted to use as much original stuff as possible. I managed to recover 70 of the 72 spokes. Much polishing later, I had to track down 2 spares. Retrodan answered the ‘wanted’ and kindly popped two spokes in the post and wouldn’t hear of taking payment – greatly appreciated and indicative of the camaraderie on RAD – thanks again Dan.
Quick parts list:
Frame: JMC Shadow (84)
Forks: JMC Darrell Young
Handlebar: GT Pro
Stem: Suntour Power Stem
Cranks: Sugino CT175s
Chainwheel: Sugino
Wheels: Pro Class / Suntour Sealed hubs
Tyres: Tioga Comp IVs
Brakeset: Dia Compe 1020 / DC Pre-bent / 84 DC Cable
Pedals: Suntour XCII
Seat: Jaguar Aero
Seat Post: GT
Padset: OG JMC
I’ll get some outdoor shots up when the sun makes a reappearance, but in the interim, here she is.
I hope you like it.
Nick

A nice clean build.
I'm a great lover of splashes of colour
( not a lover of those heavy crank arms though )

Good build that, i've always liked JMC's. I like the wheelset and tyres but not so sure about the gold parts, doesn't go that well with chrome.
I'd still have a play on it though!

I like the gold and red touches - not too much of either so they don't detract from that sexy as frameset.
Lovely bike!

Very tidy bike
Some nice bits on there, red parts are nice ,love the Suntour / Proclass / Comp 4 combo, not as keen on the gold parts though.
Still there's no such thing as a finished build
