Nice old school fork for Vector bars?
« on: February 05, 2015, 10:55 AM »
Due to the Vector bars not fitting a standard 1" fork. Can anyone advise on a nice old school fork?

Cheers!

Thats not true, Vector bars fit plenty of forks, what forks don't they fit?

The integrated stem on the 82 mini vector bars I've got won't fit inside the forks.  Tried a few different pairs.

I was asking the question so I can grab some forks that I know will fit.  Tange?

If I can just say you have given very limited information regarding your problem i.e. what forks you currently have, what frame it is (to understand what length the headtube is and what forks may fit), even so far as what the type of Vector bars are and any measurements you might have taken aside from merely deducing that "Vector bars don't fit".

Have you used a vernier caliper to measure the outside diameter of the integrated stem quill?
Have you done the same to measure the inside diameter of the forks?
It the stem quill diameter too large or too small?
Is the stem quill too long or too short?
Does the frame use a standard 1 inch BMX headset or does it use a smaller Road type Headset?
Does the frame & forks run 1 1/8 or 1 3/8 wheels?
Are the current forks a set of mini forks?
If they are mini forks do you want to replace them with mini forks that fit or with a regular set of forks for a full sizes 1.75" wheel?
Do you want to replace them with a set of mini forks that the Vector combo will fit?

Fair one Marty.   I'll consider myself schooled!

Frame, first gen VDC Chimp with first gen mini free agent forks.  Road bike headset. Doing this with a second option to change bars and forks to the mini vector bars and different forks.  Wanted to grab some before sending it to Dan for coating.

Mini vector bars  - 22mm stem diameter
free agent fork internal - 21mm (these using for first set up with VDC mini bars and mini stem.

so looking for forks just to use with vector bars if possible.

Awesome!  You may have only a few choices unfortunately!  I would try and pick up a set of mini forks with a 22.2 internal diameter which I think the Vector bars will be.  Tange Mity Lites would be a good choice in terms of mainstream forks, not sure on the other mini forks that were about.  I'm pretty sure that Tange options are limited but could be wrong.  Normal Tange TRX, TX, ARX, etc would fit but might not look right on a mini frame (being for full size rims.  Only other thing you might have to be carful with is the length of the steerer on the forks, the VDC might have a short headtube but using a road headset (as you will need to) you might avoid any issues.

Just checked it out, nice read that pal and interesting.  We've got similar idea's.  I'm have mine candy turquoise and already got the chrome print decals on clear backings.  Having seen your photos now I'm not sure if I should do the second option of vector bars and forks left in chrome.

Sorry for not noticing this post earlier Jonny.

VDC Chimp fork steer tube measurements are....

1" (25.4mm) O.D.
13/16" (21mm) I.D.
5-3/8" (136mm) steer tube length (bottom of crown race seat to top of threads)

Have you tried cleaning out the inside of the steer tube??
I have tried measuring several stems and fork for you and they all measure up the same.

If the FreeAgent forks are VDC made, it's unlikely they're a different size tubing.
As for fork choices for overall size, try looking for a set off an Expert size frameset as the steerer is std but the legs are slimmer.

I'd be tempted to ream out the FreeAgent forks as we're only talking 0.6mm wall thickness difference.

Alright Steve, thanks for your detailed response:)

I've just had another pal and it doesn't look like there's any dirt or rust in the steerer but ill get a circular file down there later.  I did think about reaming it out....oh matron!

Bars look like original come too.  I'll have time to take a better look later. Like you say very little in it.

Cheers,
Jonny
