Dyeing z rims?

I cant find the thread on dyeing z rims,i forget on how much salt it is to use etc is there a thread here or on the museum with all the details on how to do it again

I used RIT dye to dye my Z Rims. Dylon can be hard to get hold of, and the packets are smaller than rit (so you need more!). Here's my Z Rim thread, although not as 'how to' as Gaz's and the excellent seat and grip dyeing ones, but it shows how they can come out once done.

I did a set of Z'z using SNAVS method.

Things needed:
1. big Gorilla bucket from B&Q
2. steam wallpaper stripper from argos
3. RIT Dye and a tub of salt

Method:
1. Fill the bucket with enough boiling water to cover the rims (they will float a bit though)
2. Fill up steam stripper with water and turn on
3. when the stripper is producing steam stick the pipe into the water and this will keep it hot
4. add the RIT dye and salt and stir
5. give it a few minutes for the salt to dissolve and pop the rims in.
6. stir occasionally to keep the salt and dye moving.
7. leave to boil for about an hour or so or until you're happy they've taken enough dye.
8. rinse in cold water and spray with WD40 to seal.

Am using a karcher steamer to do it,do i need to keep it on all the time or once its at the boil turn it off and just let it simmer?

i had my blue ones dying for about 2 hours and they came out great.  what colour are you doing?

Am dyeing a set of mike buffs red,but i think they might come out pink i dyed blue ones black a brave while ago but forgot what the process was lol old age getting to me i think

oh dear, you might've been better off selling them and buying an old red set to bring back?  Mike Buffs are nice

I couldnt get a red set anywhere mate,i was wanting to bleach them up white but was told coz there an ivory colour they wouldnt go white,so red or pink it is for my mcs.

well there getting pinker dont think there going to be red so i doubt am going to have to look for a red set or build my shiney sides up and stick them on.

There red mate,might build them up later if i find the right hubs and spokes for them,let a set of blue og 80s 7x in the shop this morning to get buit with blue high flange shimano's coz i know if i had built them i would have marked them,the rims i bought last week from the shop who the man had them in storage from the 80s not a mark on them,but the hubs i got of meticulous are a different blue alot lighter but thats colours for you lol

The zds are still a pinky colour how do ones dye white skyways red with no hassle,i know the mike buffs are an ivory colour but thought they would have went a nice red

You might need more dye, and use as little water as possible. I used about 4 packets to do my Mike Buffs blue. I didn't have a wallpaper steamer, so I had to constantly take water out of the tub, re-boil it on the hob, and then back into the tub to keep it hot.

Well i think they have came out ok not the colour i was hoping for but they will do i'll get a pic up once there dry,just dont want to use anything to dry them coz of the dye,drummer how well di you buffs turn out?

The colour looks good 

Once they're dyed, the dye stays fast, so the dye will saty in the rims and won't run out. Mine came out really well





The only issue is that if you ride them and run regular brakes, the colour will start to fade/be rubbed out and the original colour will start to show through. I did mine 18 months ago and the bike has been ridden on quite a lot. The blue colour is still good, although you can see some fading in some areas. This photo was taken in September this year, 18 months after I first dyed them

Hey Drummersbeat they did come out well they look better than the og blue colour,think i might need to dye my white skyways i have in bleaching coz it seems as if there not getting any whiter still look as if someone had thru a creamy emulsion over them
