Old School prices then and now.....
« on: November 08, 2014, 11:02 AM »
Whilst sat in the throne room this morning perusing a 1984 copy of BMX action bike thinking how cheap everything was and how in hindsight we all should have stashed a few frame sets and other choice things I started thinking how prices compared with the current market allowing for inflation.......

Burnished Ripper with landing gears 1984 - £165 allowing for inflation upto 2013 - £474

401 single pinch flights 1984 - £135 allowing for inflation upto 2013 - £388

Alloy hub tuffs - £60 allowing for inflation upto 2013 £172

I know there are the obvious anomalies like Gen 1 masters, anything with Hutch stamped on it and consumables like tyres and brakes and the like which by their nature are thinner on the ground but a lot of parts prices don't seem to be a million miles from what they cost originally.......
You always need a cheese option......

All I know is unlike today,my parents didn't have that much disposable income and wouldn't just buy me stuff like I do for my lad.
I had to wait for Christmas and birthdays to get things like a frame and fork and wheels, everything else on my bike was bought with pocket money and I also used to swap parts with people.
£165 for a Ripper seems cheap in today's scheme of things but back in the 80s that was a hell of a lot of money....

No different for today's kids, DK cranks under £100, manufacturers dumping under 6 month old frames for under £200, last years grips £1
