Hi there, I am getting on but my sonny isn't
« on: October 08, 2014, 12:16 PM »
Hi, I am joining up to your forum for my son, I have always been amazed by bmx racing and stunts, I have been showing my sonny (Lewis) videos on YouTube and he has started watching them himself, now he is asking me for a new bmx, he said his halfords one isn't a real one and I agree with him. I would be the proudest dad if he was riding bmx either racing or stunting.

I am going to buy him a new bike for Xmas, he won't get much use out of it until spring by then he will be roughly 3 foot 8" and 7 years old

I have looked into bike sizes for his height and he is right in between a 16 inch and an 18 inch but I have decided to go for an 18 inch

I am after some advice on what 18 inch bike to get him, I looked at a gt pro series mini which is about 6kg very light but It doesn't look like the type of bike all the bmxers are using in racing or stunting, I have also looked at a "we the people curse 18 inch" which looks more like it but the weight is about 10kg.

I want to get him the best bike I can but I know nothing about them so I am hoping there are lots of knowledgable people on here and I will end up with the best bike I can get him.

Oh and we live near Corby so adrenaline alley is on our door step, I want to take him there so ideally the bike I get him would be best suited to that sort of riding

Hope you guys can help me

Hi

Racing and stunting by their nature require different types of bikes. Racing is a sleek lightweight bike, much like you've described; however, I would be wary of getting him such a small bike. He will grow out of it FAST! Mrs S G has two nippers who have raced for the last 2 years. They were 6 & 8 when they started and have always ridden 20" Jnr models. A 16" is way too small and he'll be knocking his teeth out with his knees before you know it. I picked up a couple of Jnr race bikes off here for around £100 and after a quick fettle they look like new. You never know, he could hate it after one go!

For stunting, there are many stunts on this site who will lead you in the right direction. I was shit at freestyle in the 80s and nothing has changed since :LolLolLolLol:
