IS it a big daddy or a sugar baby??
« on: June 26, 2014, 05:03 PM »
Hi there im soon going to be looking at selling my 1997 Hoffman Big Daddy which ive resto"d from a Sugar Baby complete and my question is, and in the interests of being honest to ]buyers, would you sell as a Big Daddy or as a Sugar Baby frameset??

They are identical frames in every way and its been repowdered in white with big daddy decals............

Its not a ramp room bike btw before anyone asks.

The question is "Does it really matter"??

Interesting, the next time I see the bike I'll take a look. An easy thing to overlook. Thanks.

I thought the Sugar Baby's were tri-moly? maybe not tho...

The 1997 Hoffman Sugar Baby and the Big Daddy shared the same frame and fork set.
The Sugar Baby was marketed as an entry level bike, while the Big Daddy was their top of the line Flatland Bike.

If you look at the 97 Catalogue comparing the two bikes, you see that the Big Daddy has Love Handle bars, 1" threaded/threadless stem, 4 x alloy pegs and I believe sealed hubs.

The Sugar Baby was specced with Low Drag handlebars, generic 1" threaded stem, 4 x steel pegs and I believe sealed mech hubs.

I was also under the impression that the Sugar baby was TriMoly. Personally if it started life as a sugar baby then thats what it is. Id be bummed if I bout what I thought was a big daddy and then later discovered it was something different.

the stem/forks on the bd wasnt threadless, it was a clamp on to a 7/8 shaft, you could flip it over if you wanted

This is the stem that came on the Big Daddy. It's was a 1" quill stem which had the ability to ran upright or be flipped over to drop the bars lower. Hence why i called it a threaded/threadless stem.

This is a bike test from the May 1996 edition of BMX Plus.

This is the first generation Sugar Baby frame released in 1996, you will notice in the bike test that it is a full Cro Moly F&F and also lacked the head tube gusset and "Bazooka Tube" behind the bottom bracket that the Big Daddy has.
So the 96 model was a completely different frame from the Big Daddy, then in 97 it shared the same frame set as the Big Daddy. I hope this clears up the confusion?

SAME frameset.............
so does it matter?

If it doesn't matter why not just call it a sugar baby?

If you would prefer to call it a Big Daddy (Im guessing because you want to sell it for more) then it obviously does.

Does it say in the catalogue that they share the same frame set? Were serial numbers identical? Or is that just based on looking at the pics? I was always under the impression the Sugar baby was Tri Moly vs Big Daddy that was full cro-mo (The Taiwanese cro-mo was basically hi ten mixed with cheese though  :LolLolLolLol:).

Firstly, I just wanted to get my head round if it IS identical, secondly I wanted to check out the vibe as to whether I CAN call it a big daddy and thirdly, you try and find some sugar baby decals?? I was amazed Del had big daddy ones TBH.

No, its not an attempt to sell for more than its worth and anyway from feedback ive had regarding selling its not worth (neither is a big daddy) shite anyway........

Sugar Baby's were all 4130 like the Big Daddys. It was The Egg that was the w@nk hi-ten fail from '95 one wasn't it?

To cover the OP's question though - if I bought a resto'd frame that was advertised as a Big Daddy and I later found out it was a refinished Sugar Baby, I'd be a little miffed. Might not make a difference to other people though, but if you do list it you've gotta mention that the F&F had been redone as a Big Daddy and was originally a Sugar Baby.

Not getting into dates, but from what I remember the Sugar Baby used the last version of the Big Daddy frame & then went to the frame design in the pics from a couple of posts up & it got renamed the SD-4.
The front triangle of the Big Daddy lived on in the E.P. for a few years.
