1 1/8th steerer tube lengths?
« on: March 12, 2014, 09:09 PM »
Are they all about the same length?

I just tried some 1 1/8th landing gears in my 2hip Pork with a FSA Pig headset and it only leaves half an inch sticking out for the stem to clamp on to.

Can you get forks with a longer steerer tube?

have they been cut down Ed?  as most are normally well long enough.

If they haven't been cut down then maybe they're made with a built in crown race and meant for frames with intigrated headsets which would have a lower stack height maybe?

TBH I noticed the set of LG's PeterJ lent to me when I was building up my first 1-1/8" bike were waaaaaaay shorter (about 1-1/2") than the Directors I replaced them with (and 3x heavier!) I still managed to get about 3/4" of the 1" clamp thickness onto them, so maybee your FSA headset btm race or top cap is too thick?

I'll have a mooch see if I have any 1-1/8" headset parts to bring to Terminal One on satuday Ed and see if we can drop the build hieght enough to get the stem on - put a comment on the thread for others to do the same and I'm sure we can sort it :-\
Still limping......

They do differ from manufacturer - specially with older stock (most of em nowadays are well long).

The Pig headset is a big old one Ed - in total it'll nick about an inch of length off your steerer. Best off slapping a slimmer one in  :daumenhoch:

what Danny said  big stack height  on a pig headset, although steerer lengths can vary a bit,

got two sets of ns Blazer forks mk 1 and mk2 with 18mm difference,   the shorter ones mk2 are supposed to be "the perfect length" obviously i'm not using the "perfect" frame with the mk2 cos it is to short , have to use the headset with no top cover on to get the stem to clamp without closing up at the top,   is the headtube on the Pork long?  may have to be 2hip forks with a longer steerer?

steerer on the GT Pacmans ive  got ( 2001 ) is 170 mm to allow for the cups not that it helps much  ;D
