MX901 Vs MX900 and MX1000
« on: February 12, 2014, 09:17 PM »
Chaps,

Appreciate we had that monster thread on 900 Vs 1000 the other day, just after some advice on whether MX901's are classed as better, worse or just different to 900 and 1000. I looked in the catalogue and they just seem to be a newer type.

http://www.velo-pages.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1284

Any help would be great. I have used 900 and 1000's on my build but am considering 901's for my 86 Curved Brake Bridge TA.

Thanks all!! :daumenhoch:

I personally am not keen on the look of the 901 and I use a lefty lever for the rear so need the cable stop on the caliper to be on the right.

I would also personally opt for a DC880 over a 901.

Not much help but it's all I can say as I have never owned a 901  ;D

Thanks for the help. I think I am just drawn to MX900 and MX1000's as that is all I know.

Really appreciate the reply!

DC880's look a million times better than 901's imho. Like Terry siad, I'm not a fan of 901's at all :-\
Still limping......

What about 880s Vs 900 or 1000 Spen 69? Is it just a style thing like different types of Adidas trainers - all about personal taste, or is one the Porsche of the Dia Compe world, and the other not so good?

Cheers! :)

Ps will check out the 880s!

It all depends what bike it is going on and how, if anything, it will be used.

MX900's don't flex as much as a 1000 but sometimes a 900 's reach is too short so you need the 1000.

MX1000's were first released at the turn of the 80's so a progression from Dia Compe into different types of brakes was inevitable, although, the 1000 was a tried, tested and respected caliper used my lots of racers worldwide. Some were still using them into the late 80's.

The DC Nippon, although a great brake, does flex a lot as many riders of Haro's will know, was bought out in 1986 as a 'replacement' to the 900/1000. They also released the 880 and 901 in 1985 as an alternative to using the 900/1000. The 901 is a good solid brake but not as aesthetically appealing as the 900/1000.

It's entirely up to you what you fit and run and how era correct you want to be too. You wouldn't fit a 901 to a 1982 build as the brake was not available then but, if you like the brake and are riding the bike, then it's what works for you really buddy  :daumenhoch:

Thank you! I am trying to be a purist. On my 84 & 85 GT's I have the right year brakes. Ideally I would like an 86 900 or 1000, which show in the catalogue as existing in 86 for my TA - but everyone claiming to have stamped ones - they always seem to turn out wrong. I will look at the 880, although not sure it will reach. Worst case I would use 85 MX1000 which I have owned and sold like a moron!

My hunt continues - readers will be pleased to know I have nearly finished my builds so my dumb questions will stop! :)

They were probably available back in 1986 but would have been date stamped 1985, I would imagine.

I would personally only run an MX1000/900 on a TA as it seems to suit the bike the most, aesthetically that is, and a 1985 dated one is bang on for what you need  :daumenhoch:

What colour calliper are you looking for?

Any caliper colour mate as will get SBD on the case. The chrome needs to be mint though on the quick release. Gutted sold mine. I have 83 stamped 1000 and 900 combo - just not 85. The perils of being a purist moron! :)

Early to mid 80s build I would go with a 900 or 1000.
Mid to late 80s build I would go with a 901 or 880.

Saying that I do like 890s and 1020s on early builds.

Early to mid 80s build I would go with a 900 or 1000.
Mid to late 80s build I would go with a 901 or 880.
