Apologies for the tardy response, i've been away.

Thanks for the replies - seems like the set up won't please the fashionistas.

I want to build the DY rep as a rider so I want something unconventional, interesting to build and better still exciting to ride and if its good enough for Darrell Young its good enough for me  :)

I may well be picking your brains Andy, but this project is a slow burner.  I know they need to be dialled right but tweaking for ultimate performance isn't really an issue, not with my hips! I'm assuming DY rode the first gen unit?

Chris

Can't tell which unit is on DY's bike from those photos unfortunately (the one in the pictures below looks like a mark 1 but in black not silver so maybe a prototype?). If you have any problems give me a shout and I'll see if I've had the same ones and offer a solution.

A bit more info

It's always nice to see a replica bike, and am looking forward to this one being done, BUT the 2 speed thingy looks awful in my opinion. It's just wrong. To me, bmx is single gear, no nonsense etc. Leave all that to mountain bikers and the like.

Why are so many people preoccupied with the looks?  I'm building a rider  :daumenhoch:

Personally, I appreciate the engineering.  You'll have to post how it stacks up as a rider  :daumenhoch:

From what i've read about it the change is almost unnoticeable, I think its a fascinating piece of BMX history.  I remember seeing one BITD and really wanted to try it but i think attitudes towards BMX then are very different to today. Back then bikes for me were an amalgamation of individual parts that I wanted, I never really stood back and looked at the bike as a coherent whole, the DY rekindles that emotion - heck the seat doesn't match the grips!!!

I like mis-matching parts myself. A kid i knew bitd the day owned my dream bike, a skyway T/A. From what i can remember, the rear wheel was a black tuff, the front was orange, the seatpost yellow, and the seat blue. I loved it, and still do. I still don't think that bitd i would have liked a 2 speed device though, as that would scream 'chopper' or even worse, racer. I appreciate and understand your reasons for the replica build though. No offense intended on my part  :)

None taken  :)

For me I have 2 primary thoughts or reactions if you like. I've read a lot of "looks" related comments as I have 2 related threads going on,  I have lots of bikes that adhere to the modern idea of old school building however I just don't remember discussing looks when I was riding BITD so I guess my reaction is that i'm even more determined to build with the Browning in an attempt to look at the bike through the same eyes I had as a youngster - if that makes sense? Just for this build… Then i'll be back to aligning my valve caps and tyre labels etc.

The other thing for me is that I grew up going to NBL meets, so Darrell Young is my Andy Ruffell so to speak   :D

You should build that TA then perhaps my waffle might make sense  :daumenhoch:

I think you've polluted my fragile mind........ the more I look at it the more it grows on me.  Saying that though, I quite like that set up that uses two chain wheels, two sprockets etc in tandem........ or have I imagined that?

That Hot Heart is lovely it'll be a fun challenge sourcing one with the "boomerang" gusset.

Show me a picture of said set up, i'm not entirely clear on what you're describing..
