1984 Redline MXIII/500A
« on: February 26, 2013, 07:42 PM »
This bike isn't quite finished, but it is one of my favourites in my collection. I want to lose the white calipers and levers and get some polished 1000s and Tech 3s on there, and a set of pads, but it's almost there. I'm also not sure about the 47T chainring either...looks big to me.

I did have this in red and white, but now I'm much happier. Big thanks to SBD and Del too for their usual greatness.

Here's a parts breakdown:

BRAKES: DIA-COMPE 901/880/TECH 4
GRIPS: A'ME

Really nice build that  :daumenhoch:

I like the White brakes but can see were your coming from wanting silver/polished ones , I would put a smaller chainring on though ... looks too big imo

Lovely looking bike  8)

Thanks guys. I'll see what it looks like with the pads on first before I swap the brakes out. Defo gonna change to chainring to a smaller one though...when I find one. Eventually I'll add some vintage pedals too  8)

Swapped the brakes out for NOS MX1020, polished Tech 4s with white cables. I'm happy with how it looks. I just need to get a pad set and some brake pads now  8)

Wow - that is stunning as Stu said the colour is ace  :4_17_5: :smitten:

Out of interest, what stampings are on the frame? Serial numbers etc..

Thanks mate. SBD did a great job with the candy. It has the Redline logo stamped under the bottom bracket and each dropout is stamped with production run/serial numbers...could be Giant made? I don't think it's a particularly desirable Redline frame...picked it up for a song...left me more £ to dress it  :)

Still tinkering.

I've swapped the huge 47T chain ring out for a 42T. Looks much better. I've also got a nice set of polished 890s on instead of the red 1020s, and a snide Flo Panel  :)

Just need a pad set now.

That colour is lush!!  8)  really lovely build that !!

chain ring looks much better now mate - the 47 was too big - good choice  :daumenhoch:

However, I think the original white brakes looked best of the three you tried, and even more so now you have added a white number plate ...

really love it  :smitten:

Likin' this more ! , much better chainring IMO & the 890's too  ;) . I'd get the correct spindle bolts & decals for the cranks too , but that's me !  :LolLolLolLol:

Where'd ya find NOS red 7X's ?? ....... could do with a set of minty/NOS red 7X rims myself .

Thanks for the feedback guys. I do prefer the silver brakes over the white. I think that once the pad set is on (white vinyl, red graphics) it'll balance out the white further.

Mattdub, at the mo I've got a modern Redline spindle on the build...the pitch on the thread is tighter than the vintage so my original hardware for the crank arms won't fit.  :(  I don't suppose you know where I can get the proper looking hardware with a matching thread pitch to the modern spindles?

I bought the 7x rims from the US via Ebay. I couldn't find an NOS set over here.

Cheers

I don't think you can to be honest, i'd be asking everyone i knew for an old Redline spindle and i'd also be searching high and low for one on eBay in every country.

Stickers are easy to get and there are two people on RAD that sell the bolts to fit the old spindles.

other than that.....

very nice build.  :4_17_5:
One build a year, the only way to get it right. No rushing involved.
