Right, thought id have a go at home anodising, im really pleased with the resutls considering its my first attempt, but i made a stupid error

ill let the pics talk:

levers as bought, then stripped,

then the set up equipment,

sulphuric acid and distilled water, lead cathode and ally wire to make the lever the anode,

left in the solution fizzing away for about 3 fags ( 30 mins), then remove and put into a tub of distilled water (from the condeser tumble dryer thing)

heated up some dylon mix in the nuke, let cool to about 50 degrees C,

then placed the lever into the dye for about 20 mins (this is when i realised what id done wrong)

now you have to seal the dye into the alloy by immersing the part into boiling distilled water for about 30 mins,

and hey presto, a loverly anodised tech 3, well nearly!! im personally amazed at the result!! but as you can see, i didnt connect the body of the lever properly.

Looks great for a first effort and haven't seen anyone else try it before

Set up looks complicated though. What sort of price are we talking for the gear used?

Cant beat a bit of home brew

Looks good for a first effort and i'm sure it would get better with practice.

not much, more time than anything

, power supply, connectors (which i had to needle file to fit) croc clips, tubs etc, probs around £25, then youve gotta get caustic sosa, acid, lead, etc, cant really put a price on it as i scrounged some of the bits

Not a bad finish at all and if you enjoy that sort of thing then all the better.

Personally I'd rather take my bits to the anodisers and let them do what they know best. I got a mini Pro Neck stem striped and re annoed blue and a set of 7x rims annoed red then shinesided all for only £50.

its ok paying people to do things for you but you cant beat restoring something yourself

all you end up doing otherwise is bolting new parts on a frame and i cant really see the fun in that as you can build a bike in 30 mins if you take your time

+1 Some hobby this would be if everyone just waved their cheque-book every time something needed doing. This section would be very quiet for a start.

Looking forward to the next installment when you anodise a polished component.

Great stuff Roger,it will be interesting to see a polished component done-i reckon it will be spot on.It will also be interesting to see how different colours work.I reckon you could have a queue of people wanting this done!Keep the post updated as you do more!
