How do I remove sealed bearings from a bottom bracket?
« on: July 13, 2006, 02:08 PM »
As above.  I do not want to smash them out because I want to use them again, but I want to change my cranks.
Cheers

You can use a bearing puller, it fixes inside the inner race from the outside and would rest aagains the frame, you then use a screw thread to pull be bearing out of it's seat.

You'll be able to hire one from HSS or the like...

The other way is to hammer them out with a drift, but you run the risk of knackering the bearings with the harsh impact.

I used the hammer and screw driver technique, and gave them a good old whack!

For future reference:
You can cut out some rubber discs from some thick rubber sheet and place these inside the bb shell covering/protecting the bearing race/cup to be removed before you whack it ;)

I slid the one piece cranks through as far as I could.  I the poked a long thin screw drive into the gap in the bottom bracket and gently tapped round the bearing until it popped out.  It was easier than I thought it would be.
