New project 84 Curtis pro (update)
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:22 PM »
Picked this up at the weekend, with a vision to build the bike i had through out the later half of the eighties.
Chrome is original but was a bit rusty and pitted in places, especially the stay's nearer the dropouts and a little on the fornt of the forks. Main tubes are pretty good though considering its 28 years old.
Its been in an Oxalic bath for 24 hours and today i clean it up and polished it. All the rust is gone but cant do anything about the pittng.
So my dilema is, do i just keep it original and build it with used parts? Or do i get it rechromed and build a shiney new one? (not sure my wallet could handle the prices of nos parts though)
Im even toying with the idea of having it powdered and building it custom  :-\
Either way its going to be a rider.

Before pics

Now, shiney but still pitted

Definately build it as a survivor far to many rechromes and repaints out there.

Build it with top quality survivor parts it will look the nuts :daumenhoch:

I'd build it as is, all the pitting is part of its History. You could always get some decals to put over it.  :daumenhoch:
Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.

Yep you're all right! Survivor build is the only way to go  :daumenhoch:

Want to go blue and chrome, going to need pretty much everthing. So who's gonna sell me some nice blue survivor/rider parts to build it with then?  ;)

I'd go Black and Chrome ;) Blues awkward to many different shades of blue parts.

Changed my mind on the blue theme as im doing that on another build.

Black and gold is the way im going and its slowly coming together with some nice survivor parts.  :smitten:

The Z mags are only in cause i was thinking about going for black Tuffs and just wanted to see how it might look. I like it but im not entirely convinced, so looking for some nice used gold rim/hubbed wheels to sling in  ^"^

I hear what you're all saying about the brake. Its not the nicest looking thing and not quite era correct. But it works so much better than the mx1000's etc and as im going to ride this bike thats going to be a neccessity. I may change it eventually for a more asthetically pleasing brake, if something comes up at the right money.

MX1000's are top, it's just tricky getting the set up.

I would be tempted to go with a gold or Black Dia-compe 1020 - less messing/cheaper and get some decent blocks. Trust me you will stop  ;)

Really loving this build!looks v.tasteful indeed. As said before,I would defo change the caliper for an MX1000 ideally-probably in silver/polished for me.A frame of this quality deserves the best parts.Looking forward to seeing this built :daumenhoch:

Looking good. I'd go with a black MX1000 or 1020. Don't wanna over gold it.  :daumenhoch:
