Mid school trends for bikes
« on: November 19, 2011, 05:21 PM »
Saw this for ns bikes on another forum, so, what were some trendy things to do on a mid school bike? I ask this as well as I wanna know some early 90's/late 80's ones for my bike. :daumenhoch:

Cut your bars RIGHT down. Grip flanges touching the cross bar  :daumenhoch:

Two tires on each wheel. Put a worn tire inside another one.
Reduce pinch flats, cover holes in a worn tire, and make sure the bike rolls really slow as well as increasing weight  ;)

Get a 10mm wheel spindle, bend it a little in the middle, and then force it into the ends of your bars. As far down the bend as you can. This creates an internal brace to strengthen your (usually wafer thin Haro Knee saver) bars

Red pedals on every bike, back wheel slammed, no front brake.

Nearly forgot - in addition to no front brake, you should also run with no front teeth ;)

Ok here's what I used to do:

1) Don't worry about the weight
2) Cut bars so narrow, that you have bend the lever to be able to use it
3) Fit a gyro cover :)
4) Big fat seat (grip it with your knees!!)
5) Run a cut tube as a liner inside the tyre
6) Still don't worry about the weight
7) Pull hair out trying to get those 2 into 1 upper gyro pinch bolt things to work (for custom length cables)
8 ) Get a fishbone UFO
9) Throw away the fishbone UFO because it was shit, and put the gyro back on
10) Make dropout patterns and weld them over the rear drops for "double thickness"
11) Weld brake lugs on the back
12) Weld canti lugs on the front!! (they were popular at one time)
13) Fit some sort of disc on your "grind side" between the hub and the dropout (attached to spokes) to protect spokes
14) Paint bike - tip all your old 2k paint into one pot and make a dull colour
15) Ride the bike.

There was probably more but those are what spring to mind.

how about the little gyro covers? everyone went mental for those. I was, and still am, guilty of the rear brake only.

Yeah - good for trails (unless you barspin a lot), not so good park/ramp. Never got the brakeless idea either - tried it twice and sh1t meself both times. Was told it makes you 'feel' the bike more - don't know what they were on about, made me have to change me kecks :)

Still got a couple of gyro covers (think one of them is a Hammer one, the other a Base Brooklyn) - and  :daumenhoch: on the Fishbone gyro's being crap.

Also - as been said - cut the bars down, but also cut em down so much you have to mount the brake lever under the crossbar :)

Here's an early 90s one:
Get a GT screw on peg. Cut off a few inches of handlebar or seatpost and press it into the end of the peg (leave some sticking out). Then cut the end off another peg and bang that over the tube sticking out of the first peg. Home made extended pegs. For extra cool points use a silver peg with a black extension. Then go see if you can manage more than 5 feebles before the threads strip out!

Low bars seemed just as popular as narrow ones. All stems on decent bikes seemed to have a negative rise and if you had a clamp on the top side, you felt obliged to flip it upside down.

Another one, inkeeping with the "overbuilding" of everything is seatclamps with as many bolts as possible. At least two, but perhaps even three.

When we all know, one is plenty.

There seemed to be a divide between early 90's and late 90's. In the former the term "freestyle" was thrown around a lot and bikes came with platforms on the seatstays, shortish frames with layback posts etc.. Then late 90's everything seemed obsessed in Dirt Jumping, so hefty oversize frames, normally with wishbone junctions (Hoffman Deebo, DK SOB, 2 Hip Pork, T1 Barcode etc). Also a switch happened from people wanting to run four pegs regardless of use, to 2 pegs. Gyros began to dissapear. People began to slam seats or point them towards the sky.

Around 98 there was a phase when BMX's had V-brakes. Such as odyssey A-brake.

Drilling out hubs & rims to fit 12 gauge spokes, or wheels laced twisted spoke pattern.
