ESP ( also sometimes referred to as Flying W ) was started by the father of Gary Ellis ( ex Kuwi , GT , Huffy etc etc and one of the longest ever racing BMXer's , from 1977 to 1998 ) initially I would think because Gary was 6 foot 2 and his dad wanted to make his bike fit him better hence the super long ( bitd ) stem . They were viewed as a kinda boutique brand bitd & super nice made  ;) .
